Hey guys, im currently new to the car scene and no pretty much nothing about cars at all. Im a college student that was given a honda civic as my commuter car and need some help with the fixes it requires.

The main problem i am currently tackling is that the gas guage is always stuck on full and that the tank only holds about 3 gallons.

Every time i go to the pump, i can only place about 2-4 gallons inside. I go every 75 miles about and am only able to fill 2-4 gallons.

If i try to force anymore into the tank, it overflows and leaks out of the gas cap. I took it to a mechanic who advised i replace my entire tank which i am a skeptic to believe. He said it would cost 500 bucks !

Thats how Hondas are. It'll always say it's "full" for like 100 miles. The gas tank should hold at least 11.16 gallons. You might want to keep driving it for a while.

 

here is something i forgot to mention, the previous owner had left the state and had given the keys to his friend who let the car sit in his driveway for an entire year without operating the vehicle. I just figure that the gas that was in there would evaporate or something

do you still suggest i drive the car? the gauge is always on full and never moves.

my friend suggested that the 3 gallons i fill might be filling up the reserve tank and my primary tank isnt feeding correctly. is this possible?

Carry a small gas canister in the car, and just keep driving.

There is no such thing as a reserve tank secondly i would recommend draining the fuel from the tank and refilling it with new fuel if it sat for a long time. Also you can pull up the rear seat and check the fuel tank level unit that its working correctly because it may be bad and gives off the wrong reading....if thats your problem its cheap for a used one at the junk.
