Default white/blue smoke

I just bought a 1989 civic hatch and knew it wasn't perfect but didn't know what the problems were. it blows white/ blue smoke when revving too high, if I shift early it wont smoke and it isn't over heating. it has a new head and gaskets, also new ignition control module and ignition coil. isn't leaking oil just burning it. thinking about replacing the valve stem seals then the oil cooler oring and seeing if that stops the smoking. any ideas or suggestions would be great!

Blue smoke is buring oil, so I would say check your rings, because it is happening at high rpm when the oil starts to flow more. If the blue smoke was at idle, I would say stems. White smoke is water/coolant. Are you sure you have no HG issue?

my d15b2 blows out smoke when i rev it to about 5.5k-6k every car here with a d15b2 does it lol.
but yea i, honestly wouldnt be /too/ concerned about it, i have the same problem. but you're probably burning oil like i am. check your plugs to see if it has that like white bubbley stuff around the electrode, basically any uncommon plug ware.
my guess is your leakin a bit of oil into your CB.

I don't know the most about cars so what are the rings? And honestly I'm not positive. The guy I just bought it from says its brand new. I also don't have a tachometer so I'm not sure what number it starts smoking at. If it was a little smoke I wouldn't worry about it but its a huuuge cloud that comes out and you can't see out the back window.

Someone just told me the oil rings are on the piston and im assuming I'm wrong on the name. If you take off the oil filter its a ring under it I heard could help with the smoke. Am I way off?

It wouldn't or shouldn't be the filter. The rings are on the pistons. Run a compression/leak down test. They have many DIY on here if you search. It's pretty simple and will save you money.

a compression test wouldnt necessarily indicate bad rings. if the slits are too close to one another, oil could slip through, but air wouldnt. I have seen it before; best and easiest way to tell is spark plugs, imo. then its a matter of whether its valve seals, HG, or rings. lol. compression test would show seals or HG, not always rings.

That's why if you find bad compression in one cylinder you do a leak down test.

so I decided its most likely rings, im still going to replace valve seals but im just gonna keep putting oil in it so I can at least run it. if the motor blows, or even if it doesn't, im just going to get a new motor. found some d15's for very cheap. I don't want to deal with taking it apart to just do the rings when I could just drop a motor in. seeing as it has a new head and gaskets. I found valve seals for 20 so ill start there. new motor ive found for 425 with shipping. I only got the car for 700 so even if I put 1000 into it, it was still only a 1700 dollar car which isn't bad for a Honda that ill most likely have for a very long time

Yeah man, I haye to say it also. Blue smoke is fried piston rings. White smoke is oil and or coolant and black smoke is fuel. Time for some rebuild.
