noob 98 accord temp/fuel gauge not working
hey all. so my temp and fuel gauges in my accord don't work. the fuel pump has been replaced and the scan tool shows that the computer is reading the coolant temp sending unit. but the gauges float around sometimes. any ideas on what might cause this? I don't really want to spent 150 plus dollars to replace the gauge cluster. this is my first Honda and first time having this issue with gauges. any help is appreciated
First, what engine is in the car?
Pretty sure
the 98-99 used the ECT to "feed" the ecu the temp and a different sender/sensor to "feed" the temp gauge.
So, explain a bit more please. One part says they don't work, then another says they "float" around?

Sorry lol. Typical noob mistakes. It's the f22 engine and its a 98 4door. And yes 95 percent of the time they don't work. Sometimes the gas gauge will float around. The temp gauge moved maybe two times in the last two weeks.
Ok, got something to work with now.
Lets start with the temp gauge. There is a single pin sensor/switch on the end of the head under the dist.
Remove the wire to that sensor. Ground the wire - touch it to the end of the head, bare metal. Have a helper turn the key to "on"/pos II - not to start just "on". Watch the temp gauge, what does it do? NOTE, VERY IMPORTANT - if the temp gauge begins to go to "full hot" - TURN THE KEY OFF, if it starts to go full hot, when it gets to 3/4 or 7/8 of the way to full hot _turn the key off as you do not want to burn out the temp gauge in the dash.
