Default '98 JDM ITR dropped in my '95 GSR

i recently did a swap. Got a JDM ITR engine into my gsr '95.
im running with stock gsr ecu currently,
after the swap the car ran fine and smooth.
after a week or two, im having idle issues.
the needle will sporadically jump from 3k-4k and would drop the idle down to zero causing
the engine to die.
Yesterday i took my car to see how it ran, and it gotten worst.
RPM needle is now more sporadic and it would die constantly,
the only way the car wont die is if i keep pumping gas into the engine
to keep the RPM up from going to 0.

any idea on what issue(s) i have?
will buying the obd1 to 0bd2 harness elimiinate this issue with the type r ecu?
thank

could have popped the motor. running an itr on a p72 ecu for weeks is a disaster waiting to happen

do a leakdown test and see if there is any damage

may have just had an expensive lesson on how finiky honda ecus are

You can't run an obd2 ecu in an obd1 car. It just would not be a happy camper at all. Therefore, there is no such thing as an adapter harness to do so. Get a hold of phearable.net or someone that can get you a basemap chip to gt going until you can get a proper engine management setup.

Yeah, sort out the ECU first... otherwise, the jumpy tach reminds me of a distributor on it's way out.

To expand on what Xian said. A bouncy tack needle is typically a result of a ICM on its way out. Please run a proper ecu for the ITR motor. It's a cheap investment for your expensive motor.

Plus, US ECU do not run the JDM motors well. Your motor probably has no Crank Angle sensor, and if you're running the US Harness you should have an extra plug.

A JDM P73 is $150 from Hmotoronline, and they ship fast.

I have an ITR and made the decision to spend the extra money on the correct ECU when I dropped in a JDM R motor due to the stock motor taking a crap. Best decision I made in the swap. Zero issues, and started up first time and is going on several thousand miles and 4 months of driving.

But he's got it in an obd1 car. The p73 won't do him any good unless he converts the whole car over.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Jdm ecu's run obd1 codes in a obd2 casing. I have a 99 jdm itr swap in my 97 gsr with hondata s300. When I was waiting for my s300 to come in, and being eculess, I plugged my p72 in and it did exactly what your car is doing. after that i took out the Ecu out right away,. Like others have stated, I would get a proper Ecu before you do any further damages to your expensive swap.

I did the same swap, a 98' spec JDM ITR into my 95' GSR. The motor is running off the JDM P73 ECU that came with it and my car's original OBD1 wiring harness. You don't have to change the whole wiring harness to do this, all you need are several conversion harnesses for the ECU, distributor, injectors, and alternator. It's a simple plug and play operation.

you can use an obd2a to obd1 harness in order to make it clip right in

not sure why this didn't dawn on me earlier but the OP can have his ecu socketed for crome and run a p73 engine map.

most every major tuner will have the p73 fuel/ignition map they could burn on a chip

^That was my first suggestion basically. A $30 chip and a socketed p28 could get the OP up and running just fine.

I stand corrected. After doing a little bit of reading, I see that you can go that way and still keep the ECU relatively happy. I guess I just never tried to go from an obd1 car to an obd2 ecu.

doesn't even need the p28. since he has an obd1 gsr he'll have a socketable p72 to use. just needs to have someone solder in the socket and burn the chip
