Have you looked around the engine bay and even listened to see if you can hear where its coming from?

Ear close to the valvetrain?
Listening by the accessory belts?

Only a few places a ticking can come from....

What rpm range? Medium like normal driving or high like before shift or gettin on it? Could be oil thickness issue but my guess would be valves need adjustment.

Could be bad gas, or the ignition timing or valve clearance needs adjustment.

What car?

Find out. There will be a label on it. Should be a P06.

Any CEL codes?

The stock ECU for your car would be located under the front passenger's carpet. Look there first.

The method for checking CEL codes depends on what ECU you have.

The PM6 ECU is OBD0 and is for the D16a6 engine (I think). The D15b7 engine is OBD1 and requires the OBD1 P06 ECU.

My guess would be that the engine-ECU mismatch is the root cause of your problem. There may be other problems, but first address this important one.

It's very possible. Maybe others will also chime in.

There's a Codes sticky at the top of this forum. It'll tell you how to look for codes on your PM6.

You should verify the mechanical timing is spot on as well. A tooth off could cause some chatter like you've described.

so the On-Board Diagnostics is mostly for emissions but various other sensors like the TPS, knock sensor, crank position, cam postion etc...they send electrical currents to the ecu. they are mostly electrical sensors not mechanical, especially OBD0 and OBD1. for noises you hear, you usually have to diagnose yourself. so start w/ the valve adjustment and oil change. its the infamous single cam tick, every one ive owned had the same thing until i did the adjustment and a good rule of thumb is ''you'd rather hear it, then smell it.'' (the gas you waste from making them too tight.)
