93 Accord ATranny Question
My 93 Accord with 190K started not wanting to shift right yesterday. Did it once on the way in to work and then once on the way home. This morning, on the way to work, took off slow and would not shift. 3k RPM at 40 MPH sustained speed. On the way home started like the morning, but then acted fan the rest of the trip. (I only drive about 5 miles and max speed is 40). Checked fluid and it is pink and full.
Broke out the Honda Service manual. Did the trouble shooting checks. Came up with TCM codes of 1, 2, 7, and 8. 1 and 2 are for the lock-up solenoid valve and 7 and 8 are for the shift control solenoid valve.
My question is this, what are the odds that both of them would go bad at the same time? I haven't had any tranny issues. Did replace the ICM, ignition coil, and fuel pump a 2 years ago. Other than that, she's been great.
I plan on replacing them myself. According (no pun intended) to the book, it looks fairly simple, a few bolts each. Any objections?

It is highly unlikely that all four solenoids would go bad at the same time. First check the wiring to and from the solenoids, there are two grey connectors near the upper leading edge of the trans. Make sure they have not been damaged or had fluids leaked on them. Also verify that the ground strap from the battery to the transmission is fine, as is the ground strap at the engine mount that also connects to the cam/valve cover.
It is most likely that the transmission computer "TCU" has a bad resistor(s) and/or capacitor(s). Go to http://techauto.awardspace.com/transmission.html

What happens is that the transmission computer has a couple cheap parts that fail. The failing parts may or may not automatically put the TCU into a saftey (limp) mode (aka, the "fail safe strategy.") The three known failed components are two resistors and a capacitor inside the transmission computer. The symptoms are of several types. The car "S" light or "D4" is on (just stays on D4 no matter what gear is selected) or blinking and the transmission won't shift into any gears or sometimes stuck on a certain gear. The trouble codes could be 1,2,7,8,9,15 or None. Shifter interlock control unit buzzes. When the driver steps on the gas the rpm goes high but the car refuses to move at the expected speed. By resetting the TCU, either by removing the fuse for a certain period or by disconnecting the negative battery for 5 to 10 seconds will eliminate the problem, but only temporarily.
Mad Mike,
Thanks for the reply. I saw it and checked the connectors (they were fine) and checked the grounding straps (they were fine as well). I took the TCM out and apart and checked the resistors like the link said. They all look fine. So, I pulled the fuse and reset the TCM/ECM. Been going since then with no problems. If it acts up again, I'll check the other things the link mentions. Thanks again for you help.

If its holding in 1st and not upshifting the other thing may be the TPS. The bitch of this is the TPS does not always set a code. Bottom of the AT Techauto page has a blurb on it.
