Got an issue i cant figure out. Drove home parked the car and turned it off. Got back in it, no start. So my car did that sometimes i would just have to wait about five to ten minutes to try it again. It usually starts but not this time. So its been like this for a week. Rebuilt starter solenoid and they said it should work fine. Replaced the ignition swith still nothiing. Changed the ground terminal to the battery, still nothing. Tried other battery's, still nothing. Tried bypassing both switches under clutch, still NOTHING! I cant figure out for the life of me what is wrong. I here the fuel pump coming on so Im sure its not the main relay. I had to of those anyway so I tried both. Somebody please help!

 

So the starter is not spinning at all?

Does it have an aftermarket sec system?

Check the #9 fuse in the underdash box.

Have you tested the starter relay?

 

Starter relay? No I havent. I have not seen a starter relay only the fuse for the ignition. under the hood. Someone had a Giford, i think thats the name of it, sec system installed before i bought it like 4 four years ago but it was disabled before i got it also. And no the starter isnt spinning at all.

 

First thing to do is check the battery voltage. Then if that checks out, remove the battery connections clean them up and reinstall and try to start again. If not, then you check for voltage going to the starter when you try to start it. If yes voltage then it can only be the starter. If not, then check the clutch switch.

I don't think we have a starter relay 'though I could be wrong but I've never seen one. I think the ecu acts as the relay.

 

There is no starter relay, don't bother looking for one.

First thing I would do is get a piece of wire ( 16 gauge would be nice) about 18" long and strip 1/2 inch on both ends. Put the trans. in neutral, pop the hood and jump start the starter. What you want to do is make a connection between the + terminal on the battery and the spade connector at the starter. If the starter is good it will turn right away with no hesitation.

If it doesn't turn, you have a bad starter, that's the problem.

If it turns, then the problem is somewhere else and the most likely problem in the Ignition switch. I replaced mine with a brand new aftermarket one and it's crap. It kills voltage and current so I was only getting 10.7 volts at the starter with a good 12.5 volt battery. This was the second switch, both aftermarket and both bad.

I fixed it by putting a relay. I used the wire that used to go to the starter to actuate the 12 volt relay and the relay sends battery voltage straight to the starter. Problem solved.

 

I guess the FSM is wrong on the 95 MT cars.......see attached and one of them you'll have to "flip" 180.....me and my scanner don't always get along.

EDIT: What do you really think that "small" wire from the clutch inhibitor does.....you know it can't carry enough current to run the starter.....come on guys....I'm not one to pull s#%* out of my ***.......I look, I read, I've been there-done that.

There is no starter relay. This is straight from the Honda service manual and it CLEARLY shows no dedicated starter relay.
Mine is right side up, maybe that will help.
There is no starter relay because the starter has a built in relay. If you have ever rebuilt a starter ( I have) you know that the solenoid plunger is the one that makes the starter motor spin by making contact across the two large brass terminals inside the starter housing. For that reason, there is no dedicated starter relay.

Search "that" manual for the rear power window......or anything else with a four door....and I bet you figure out you don't have all the info...... this is simple for me and you want to get upset.....even better

You downloaded "some" manual from the internet and think you are "god"......I have the book....let me repeat....the book. If you want pic's of the cover fine......again why I had to "scan" the info.

Yes, the "popular" download of the manual (94 coupe) does not cover this....If you are "true" then you'd buy the service manual.....hence the pages I scaned from the 95 Service Manual I posted.....

Ok I'm not sure whats going on here but my car has no starter relay. But i will try jumping the starter tomorrow. Should have done that a long time ago.

 

Yes, do that. That's the best way to rule out the starter itself as the problem.
Don't forget to put the transmission in neutral before doing that.

Thanks poorman I never even knew there was one. I never said you were totally wrong I just doubted it since I never heard anyone say there was one and I never looked it up, myself.

OP, now you can locate the starter relay, turn the ignition to on, press the clutch in and check for voltage at the starter.

 

If the car is OE Auto trans - there is not one. If the car was OE Manual trans then there is one.

In a manual trans - if you are not getting voltage to the small wire on the starter then you need to check things "up stream" of the starter. Which includes the inhibitor switch on the clutch....including the "pad" that contacts the switch....and the starter relay.

I didn't realize that the OP never checked for voltage on the small wire at the starter....so I assumed (wrong of me) that there was no voltage on the wire while trying to start the car.
