2000 odyssey po720 and po740 codes...need advice
Hi all,
Got a code of PO720 and PO740 on my 2000 Odyssey 3.5 v6 with 135,000 miles. Rebuilt the transmsission about 3 years ago and it is now out of warranty. The code came up after a 60 mile one way trip on the highway, and has been on ever since (about 2 months now).
Truck runs fine otherwise.
Am i doing damage by driving it like this?
Is it operating in limp mode?
Is a transmission rebuild the only way to correct this?
I would hate to get rid of it since I have maintained it meticuosly otherwise.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

thanks for the reply..... just disconnect the battery and wait 15 minutes, correct?
how long ( in miles or minutes) should it take for the light to come back on if the transmission itself is in need of a rebuild and a torque converter?
Will changing any solenoids be of any help in this matter?
thank you

the P0720 is turbine shaft speed sensor failure its located on the outside of the trans check resistance across the sensor, It should be 400-600 Ohms of resistance . The P0740 is a trans clutch control solenoid, they had a bulletin for a clogged screen on the solenoid. If it also had a p0730 I would say go ahead and replace/rebuild. Since its only the two you might get off easy
. I would look into replacing the speed sensor and clutch solenoid first before replacing the trans, but as often as those transmissions go bad I wouldn't rule it out completely.
take it to auto zone and have them to clear it, that way you can be sure all the freeze frame data has been removed.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but I'm dealing with a p0730 on my 2003 Honda pilot, (my thread zero replies halfway down page) I believe they have a similar or same transmission... Am I basically forced to rebuild transmission now??
Many thanks I advance for any help..

P0730 is the death code, p0740 has a TSB to clean the screen on the solenoid/replace the solenoid, before replacing the transmission. you MIGHt be able to get away with it with the p0740 before replacing the trans.
Many many thanks for the help, I've been far and wide across this vast Internet looking for someone to give me some direction..

This is what I figured to be the case... Now I've heard about pressure switches on the transmission that people replace around this similar age... If I'm going to have this transmission rebuilt, could you give me an idea or things I should be doing to it above and beyond the regular rebuild process to ensure it lasts equally as long... Like should I be investing in a external cooler? Should I buy all new pressure switches? I just want to make sure that when I'm talking price to rebuild with the shop I know exactly what they should be doing to this Honda transmission while it there...
