When you're riding, the car would be very bouncy. If you're out of the car, push down on the car a couple of times and see how long it takes the car to stop moving up and down. If it goes back to standard ride height right away, your shocks are fine. If the car goes down easily and it takes a long time to stop moving, the shocks are probably blown.

the car is bouncy/wavy and it feels like your "hittin switches" when your not... also look for oil/leakage around the shock body and shock rod... if you press down and bounce the car the car should rebound in about 1 bounce.. if it bounces a couple times before settling their probably blown...
