Default G23 - Student's - The little I could afford Turbo build

Hey everyone,

I have been around HT for a year i guess. Been reading up and trying to find help when needed.

So today, after alot of thinking i decided to create this thread. Tell everyone about my turbo build.

It all started last year when i started to read about possible combinations on the G23 motor. I had a used H22 which i knew being a used motor will give up some day. And hell it did. Early this year spun the bearing trying to rev to 8000 and H22A7 was history. At that moment I had limited options. Long story short i decided to chase the dream and build the turbo G23.

I am a student, international in a place where parts are non existent. My lack of funds and the location does not help in chasing such boosted dreams. None the less - now 7 months into the build my parts list is below, what i have - what i hope to do. My goals, dreams, mistakes and short comings.

My goal:

Build a reliable - Road going / weekend drag warrior 1994 CC7 Accord.
Power: 350 - 450 HP
Turbo Lag - I dont mind it want boost around 4500 - 5500 rpm
Red line - 8000 rpm
Boost - 8-16 psi, we get crap fuel here that will restrict me on this.
Tuned - by yours truly (not the most convincing I know).

Parts list:

Bottom end:
F23 block rebored to 86.5mm
K20 Arais -6cc dome pistons ( picked used on k20.org) Comp 9.8:1 on G23
Race ENg / Molnar Rods H beam
ACL HX bearings on both rods and mains
KMS oil pump
KS tuned balance shaft delete kit

Top end:
H22 head - mild port and polish - port matched
Crower stage 2 forced induction special cams
AEM cam gears
Cam degree by yours truly - using lobe separation method
Supertech dual springs and TI retainers
Stock valves
BMC street manifold
70mm skunk alfa throttle
3 Bar Map sensor

Electronics and Extra's
AEM series 2 engine management
MOCAL oil cooler with thermostat (just cause h22 would not fit and S2000 i could not find) 13 row 235 matrix
Oil pressures gauge
Oil temperature gauge
Fuel pressure gauge
Innovate LM1 AFR kit / Gauge

Parts ordered still to receive:
Precision intercooler
Trial sport wastegate
Greedy BOV
780cc precision injectors
Magnacore spark plug wires
NGk heat rating 7 spark plugs
Garrett GT3782 twin scroll T3 Journal bearing

Parts to be ordered:
AFI bottom mount twin scroll manifold with single wastegate
Piping for intercooler
Boost controller / solenoid
Want to get a good grounding kit - suggest one?

Chassis:
Accord CC7 UK edition
Front brakes 300mm twin pot calipers (accord type R)
EBC yellow stuff pads
D2 Rally asphalt coilovers
16" Bridgestone 205/45/16 all around. Hope to go 17" soon.

Short comings / Mistakes
-Everybody thinks the turbo is too big, I read the compressor map looked sound to me. And honestly it was a crazy deal to me, getting this new at 650$ was just too irresistible to let go.

- I dont think its the best cams for the job, but I have choices Euro R or All motor stage 4 cams from crower. Would still love to have custom made set for me.

- Compression, i guess it would be much nice to have it lower and run higher boost but i could not afford other pistons at that time that what i had at home.

- Am a learner tuner - Dont have a AEM professional locally, I read, I ask, I learn. Taking all the precautions knock sensors, egt, detonation headphones... but am still learning slowly.

Some pics below:

Sunset on the island:

Your words, advice, wishes and comments are most welcome. This is my first every turbo build, hope i dont get too beaten by the big boys. Though I would like to thank alot of them who have helped me along and lived my stupid questions time to time. TO name some of them:

98Vtec
AFAaccord
Pirate
KStuned
Blake
The shodan
Rosoko racing
Rocket
DDtech
And many others.

Kind Regards

I know that feel! My first Turbonetics turbo sat on my desk for about a month so I could strictly look at it till I got the rest of my parts.

Rad build dude! Are you from the UK then? And what chassis is that?

Your project is great. I'm rebuilding a 97 accord, must feel good to be putting it together. I'm stuck waiting to save so I can get a full motor and tranny.

Build is looking pretty sweet. That is a very detailed and planned out build list, you don't see that very often.

How did the ACL race bearings work for you? Clearances all within spec I would assume or the block wouldn't be in the chassis...lol

Thanks guys you bumped the spirits.

Am from mauritius small island in the indian ocean. Its a accord cc7 build by honda or rover in uk. Same as a cb chassis if am not wrong.

The acl hx worked great I got loose clearences in line with what acl provide. Kept them loose as worried about long stroke high rev flex of the crank.

Still need a lot of bits but loving sharing the dream with you guys.

WILL post more pics of parts tomorrow.

Very cool, just looked around at a few pictures of those on Google. Man seeing our same cars in different countries is weird, but I'm sure seeing the American versions is just as weird for you. Good luck on your build, I'm definitely subscribed.

Hey,

We actually have the JDM version here most of it. Mine is a one of kind on the island. A french man imported it to the island, then it was sold to two other owners. The last one blew the F20z motor it had and left it to rot on the side of the ocean. I picked it up in the dying state that it was... and that was the start of my story. I actually prefer the CD or CB.... but i love mine now. Just have to find a way to adapt the perlude headlamps as i cant find replacements for the ones i have.

Well.... Wanted to share some eye candy with you. Have had this for months but hopefully it will be the last perfection touch on my build.

ITs a cluster from the iconic Accord Type R....

This is my backup parts store.... basically the only other rental room in my little bachelor pad... you know students houses... I actually share it with a south africa female... prefer the car... if you know what i mean

Last some island sky to say good morning to you all...

Great stuff.. nicely planned project.

I think the GT3582R will be a great turbo and for that price it was a steal! The twin scroll housing should help spool and I do not think you will have any issues with your goal.

In for the updates.

Cool looks like you're making some progress. I'm no engine building expert but you might want to consider having a proper turbo cam and bigger valves to make your build more beneficial? Impressive build for being a student on a budget good luck!

Thanks guys.

If the engine works well I want to rebuild the gearbox cause it is almost 15 years old. Don't want it to mess up.

But definitely proper custom turbo cams are a something I want to add to the setup.

Here are some more pics.

We put the intercooler to the side, as keeping it in the middle was making piping on the turbo side a total pain. So we moved it on the side, now turbo fits direct to intercooler and piping goes from under the fender into the throttle.

Hey everyone,

Finally we completed her and now i have her parked outside work.

I think its a great feeling to know that the dream is complete.

VERY SORRY HONDA GURU'S FORGIVE ME I DINT TAKE YOUR ADVICE ON THE TURBO SETUP, BUT A baby boys wants what he wants.

Here are some pics. Let me have your opinion.

The black intercooler is not visible, i think that is what i love the most about the car

Simple engine bay

I am running only 10 psi of boost for now.

ON 1-2-3 she sees full boost at 4500rpm
and on 4-5 she sees it at 3750-4000 rpm.

Am happy with that.

Let me have your opinion.

Can't beat the sleeper look. I'd replace those radiator hoses with some silicone ones though. It'd be a shame if one burst.

Build is looking really good!

I would agree that you should replace any old and dried out coolant hoses.. OEM hoses will do!

Hey thanks guys.

Those hoses are oem nissan. Due to the piping near the throttle the honda hose was getting bend and crushed. This is a good curve from a nissan march. Front is from a toyota.

I think silicone are over rated I have seen a few burst in front of me. Or maybe we just get the bad silicone down here.
