95 accord VTEC auto won't crank
Got a 95 Accord I am helping a friend with and sometimes it won't crank. I checked the battery and connections. I also pulled out the main relay and took it apart. One part of the solder looked funny, but not burnt. I resoldered that one any way and it would still not crank. It will just spin over and not run because there is no fuel. I then moved it in and out of park several times, and then I heard the fuel pump run. Then the car cranked right up. I even moved it and then moved the gear stick several times. Cutting it on and off and everything works. This is what the guy said it would do to him. It would just take the notion to not crank. I am thinking about telling him he needs a neutral safety switch, but I don't understand why the main relay didn't work until the gear shift was moved.
The shifter cable may be out of adjustment. Does the 'P' light up when placed in park? Can you hear the shifter interlock mechanism work when the key is turned to on and the brake pedal depressed? If no the interlock may be damaged or disconnected allowing shifting to occur but the electrical side of the NSS may still be working.
The "p" does light up and it will turn over in both Park and Neutral. I guess I am going to try a main relay. I tried to crank the car yesterday and the fuel pump would only run a few seconds (when it would run). As long as it would run, the car will run and cut off. I think the relay may be weak?
