Default Dealer rust proofing - waste of money scam?

Hey,

parents just picked up a brand new 2013 Accord, dealer tried to peddle them their undercoating and 'Platinum Plus' rustproof package, I asked to look at a vehicle that had just had it done, material used looked ok, but it definitely wasn't done in all the right places....also. I'm pretty sceptical about the 'lifetime warranty' - I can't imagine having to fight for a fix after 10 years....

I told them they need to get it rustproofed (CDN car) but was wondering if anyone has had experience with the factory/dealer stuff vs a good aftermarket provider.

Oh yeah, they also had the option of the electrical anti-rust gizmo....

i don't vouch for dealer sales pitches like this. a little bit more undercoating in the wheel wells and some area's in the chassis isn't a bad idea but it's a passable one. honda, sudaru and toyota do a really good job (and a few others do also) but one thing i would do is spray body wax in the quarter panels..... a strong amount and as far forward as you can reach. this means taking some interior out and also the bottom area of the door skins.

body wax sticks to paint but water doesn't stick to wax. its a good barrier. there's other area's but these are the most you see. quarters with rust at the dog leg area leading into the rocker and the inside of doors.

im guessing the dealer didn't do that

Yeah, did a bit more research and confirmed my suspicions that it's just a massive high-mark-up profit scam for the dealer, I mean the vehicle I looked at they hadn't even peeled back the rubber door seal trim at the bottom of the door!

I've always done my own vehicles, but the parents want something w/ a warranty, even though I told them good luck getting any results on a claim for something like rust..

I know up here the Krown process is well regarded and friends have had good success with it, but there's a newer company called Corrosion Free that was supposedly started by one of the Krown originators that doesn't drip, is solvent free so that it's easier on rubber components and lasts a bit longer than the Krown...some say that since it's thicker it doesn't get in as many cracks and crevices, and also they don't drill panels to apply it, which may be a positive or negative depending on which way you look at it...

The dealer rustproofing tends to use decent quality stuff. But the goobers that apply it rarely know what they are doing and don't put it in the right places. They just rush through and spray it on the easy to get places that don't have much purpose. Like Jason said you should be removing some panels to access the important areas. I use motorcycle chain wax and it works great to fill in some tight crevices and repel water. There are plenty of places inside body plugs and behind panels that have spot welded areas that will be prone to rusting. I have seen some good rust treatment done at canadian shops that does involve drilling access holes as well. Sometimes it can get a bit messy but its always better than having rusty **** in my opinion.
