Still overheating...1996 Honda Accord LX
230,xxx miles
Replaced:
OEM thermostat and thermostat gasket
Radiator cap
Radiator
Thermo switches
Driver side fan
Still overheating after driving for an hour or so. Today, it overheated and the oil and battery light flicked on and off, the car cut completely off (while in traffic) and I had to put it in park to get it to start again.
Oil was 4 1/2 quarts full. Battery and alternator tested fine at Auto Zone but the alternator tested bad at Advance Auto Parts.
My mechanic is at a loss and with the gauge riding, I turned the heat on blast, windows down and straight to Honda at 5PM. They closed at 7PM so all I could do was leave it there since they wouldn't have time and I didn't want to risk driving it.
Everyone's saying it doesn't look like a blown head gasket because it has none of the symptoms. The overheating only happens after the car has been driven for a while.
With a infrared gun, it showed that the upper radiator hose was at 180 near the radiator but 240 near the actual engine.
I'm at a total loss...

Keep the ac completely off. Take all spark plugs out and gently hand tighten them all four down. Next start the car up and idle it. When the temperature gauge gets to the halfway mark, check the lower hose. Is it hot now ? Immediately check the fans. While keeping an eye on the gauge to be sure it doesn't get above halfway and into the overheat level, see if only one or both fans are coming on. If the lower hose is hot and both fans are coming on but it's still overheating do a compression test. If it starts to overheat, just turn it off and do the compression test.
It would be wise to do the compression test immediately. If you haven't got a compression tester yet. Get one and idle the car until it gets warmed up and turn it off and do the compression test. It's important when removing the spark plugs that they aren't overtightened. When the engine is hot and the spark plugs are ridiculously overtightend you can damage the head but it's best to do the compression test when the engine is warmed up so you just need to make sure the spark plugs are just gently hand snug when you remove them.
Then just report back your compression test results. There are howtos on youtube for how to compression test if you want. If the lower hose isn't getting hot or both fans aren't coming on, report back please.
