Default 08 Civic SI 4Cyl 2.0L V-tec Overheating/AC Problems

Hey all,

Just want to say thanks for your help in advance. As a newly graduated student with loans and debt getting my car fixed is the last thing I have the money for right now and appreciate your help with a disgnosis as I have already spent 300$ trying to fix this issue.

Two months ago my car started to have problems. The first thing to go was the air conditioning. I had more 134a put in a few months before but it only was a temporary fix.

I broght it into Advance Auto Parts to purchase more 134a. The gentleman there helped me gague the amount in the car and said adding more was not necessary. He said it might need to be flushed (not his exact words) out or something?

Next thing to happen was the car would start to overheat. Instead of staying consistant (at 50% on the gague), it would shoot up to 2/3 or 3/4. If the car was in neutral and not moving (dont know if its the wind helping cool) then it would almost get to the very top. I attempted to put more coolant in, but wasn't sure how much to put in. This very shortly fixed the issue before it started to do the same thing.

I then brought my car into the shop. They fixed a spark plug that was out (I feel this was unrelated to the issue as I could feel one of the four cylenders prior to this not kicking all the time). They also went on to tell me it just needed more coolant and 134a. I was happy due to the cheap fix and picked my car up. AC and heat problems funcitoned fine until the AC went out two weeks later and only blows hot air again. The overheating of the engine started shortly after.

I don't believe there are any check engine lights on as of now. I can only drive my car short distances and hope that it does not overheat. Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem? Or hear of a situation like this happening before?

Start your car and pop the hood. As it gets warmer, do the fans kick in? Do you see them working blowing air?

Maybe your fans do not work.

Maybe your thermostat is stuck closed

Maybe you have a hole in your radiator?

Maybe you blew a head gasket and that is why it is overheating

About the A/C issue, you need a new A/C compressor or to find the leak in one of your lines. Probably wait to fix the A/C issue until you can afford to take it to a Honda Dealer. The overheating issue seems more important. Hopefully it is not due to the engine.

best of luck

^^What he said.

Could be as simple as low coolant level. Eliminate the easy points first.

It seems fairly clear that you have a leak in both your cooling system and your A/C system. If they charge them up, it works, then stops working over time, that is usually indicative of a leak.

Get a UV light and look around your A/C system. A stain that floresces under UV should indicate where your leak is (the oil they put in A/C systems has a tracer dye in it).

While your car is running and hot, pop your hood and look around your coolant lines for a leak. Given the time frames you give for it to stop working, it's probably a fairly slow/small leak, so you might just find a wet spot where the coolant has been leaking.
