No code, but severe hesitation, once a day or 2
Hello. as you can tell, I am new to the Honda world.
My daughter presented me with her 95 Civic, with a 1.6 non vtech, after taking it to several shops, and asked me to look at it. She gets a hesitation every couple of days, sometimes the cel light comes on then goes off and no code is stored.
The shops have changed the cat. converter, distributor, as well as brakes, master cyl. and clutch.
When I first looked at it, I found loose spark plug wires, oil in spark tubes and a loose spark plug, as well as a very dirty air filter.
to eliminate normal problems, I changed the valve cover gasket and tube seals, new plugs, cap, rotor, wires, fuel filter, pcv, and air filter, as well as an oil change.
It runs much better(go figure) but still has this intermittent problem.
I hate to be a parts changer, so if anyone could help, I would appreciated it very much.

Noticed no one has responded in a couple days. I would suggest a couple more free / low costing possible solutions.
Clean the throttle body
Clean the EGR port
Make sure you have up to par spark plugs, I suggest NGK
Other suggestions would be your throttle position sensor, and your fuel injectors.
If it isn't any of those, then I'd be surprised!
Also is it idling high at all?

You need to check that CEL as soon as it comes on.
You can either use the smartphone OBD reader or just jumper the CEL and read the code.
Even if you're/she's driving, safely pull over and get a code.
Have you driven this and felt the hesitation?
Is it when you put it in gear? Put a load on it?

Thank you ,Buckshot870, I have cleaned the throttle body, as far as I can tell, it has no egr valve, I have checked the tps, less than 1 volt static, 4.5 wot. Re-pulled the spark plugs and they are clean.
Thanks Joshka89, I have given her a paper clip and instructed her on its use. After the last time I looked at it, pulling the plugs checking connectors etc. it has not happened.
I am hesitant to say fixed, but on hold for now.
Thanks again!!!

I have a similar problem with my 01 Civic EX. It has 120,000 miles. After a cold start, during acceleration both the first and second times I hit about 2800 rpm's there is hesitation ( loss of power ). If I continue to press accelerator problem worsens. I take foot off gas pedal and then may accelerate again until the second time I hit 2800 rpm's whereupon there is another hesitation. After the second one car runs great until the next cold start. The check engine light does not go on and shop says no codes are indicated.
Shop updated computer ( ECM-PCM ) but problem persists. This started intermittently a couple of months ago but is now every time I engage a cold start. Unfortunately, when I took it to the shop and left it over night, they did not experience this.

check the oxygen sensor...
once in my civic d16y8 I was having hesitation in the range of 2000 to 3000 rpm without CEL.
I changed a varity of thing´s without success...
then changed the oxygen sensor and problem solved... (like I said before no check engine light).

I just want to know for future cases as it's too late now with a rod knock caused my first owner running the car oil low & not changing it either just adding = hella sludge). Found this out just now years later
Kinda figures too because my brother changed the header just before parking the car for 1.5 years so the sensor probably old & never changed or faulty.
Thanks.
Thanks again for all the advice, the problem has yet to re-surface, so for now I am going to say it is fixed.
As far as using the words help, and best, I do not believe this makes anyone sound stupid. If someone needs help, does that make them stupid??? If someone does the best they can, does that make them stupid??? Or are they lazy for not wanting to perform tests that are not called for???
I think someone is waaaaaayyyyy 2 grumpy. LOL

Aside from that, most of these test are VERY simple and don't consume a lot of time, or effort.
The test you don't perform is the test that diagnoses your issue.
It's like old WW2 type stuff, the job you don't do properly is a victory for Hitler.
