Wheel Bearing
How do i know if the wheel bearing is bad rear tire 1992 honda civic sedan automatic...I have replaced drums and shoes (brakes) and it still is making a noise. When i take tire off i turn where the bearing would be and sounds fine when i put tire back on and move the tire it makes a grinding noise but when i drive it ...it sounds like a knocking noise not a loud noise. Could that be wheel bearing.
If the inner bearing race has axial play, it's bad. Have your wheels been balanced?

I could be various things, do you see any rub marks on the backing plate? A bad wheel bearing will make a growling sound and wont always have movement, but its a tale tell sign. If you pull the wheel and drum off spin the hub and if it feels rough that's a bearing.
Also make sure the bottom of the new shoes hasn't popped out of the little groove they sit in. If they have, take the bottom spring off and pop em back in. If they're out of groove, they'll rub the inside of the drum and grind. Might happen if you had to whack the drum at all to get it to sit flush after installation.
