Honda ATF DW-1 VS ATF- Z1?
I plan on dropping the automatic transmission fluid tomorrow for fresh, its original, I been doing research and was wondering what the difference is between the two?
And also when I go to the Honda dealer can I mix the original '99 fluid with the new?
ALSO do I HAVE to do the Drain and fill 3x or can I just do it once? 9 quarts of transmission oil is priceyyyyy

If the fluid has never been changed, your tranny may start acting up if u change it now. I would just leave it alone at this point.
But to answer your question, yes they can be mixed. If u only drain & fill once, you're only replacing half the fluid. If u do it 3 times, you'll be replacing most of it.

Last time I got atf from Honda I went there looking for dexron ii. They came up to the counter with the dw-1 stuff and assured me it was backward compatible with everything up to that point and they were only going to sell dw-1, going forward... so yes, according to Honda, its backward compatible with everything.
Buy 9 quarts of Valvoline Maxlife instead. The gallon jugs (4 quarts) go for $22 around here. Much cheaper, works just as well. Google "Maxlife vs. Z1/DW1."
BTW: to drain and refill 3 times, you will need probably 12 quarts (3 gallons, 3 quarts per refill.)

Pot calling kettle.
So asking for ways to cut corners and to get around a standard procedure because you're broke is a valid thread to you?
If you or anyone else doesn't like what I posted, report it! Now you're as guilty of adding nothing as you claim I am. Dumb.
I guess people fail to remember that critical thinking and ability to follow directions are ALSO part of the technical aspect of working on cars. Don't get mad when someone calls you on it.
BTW, the OP didn't ask for cheaper alternatives, he SPECIFICALLY asked if he could get away with NOT having to refill 3 times. Sounds cheap and lazy at the same time. If that small expense is going to break you possibly you might want to invest in a scooter.

From what I can understand the z1 is no longer available, so if you felt the need for "honda genuine" you would have to use the dw-1, which from what I have read and been told is compatible with the older z1. I would personally use something other than z1 or dw1, like redline or amsoil atf as I feel the z1 and dw1 atf is too slippery providing soft grandma-ish shifts instead of firm, positive shifts. You could do the 3 qts now, and 3qts later, then 3qts even later if you wanted. That's what I did with my automatic d16 civic, as I was told that doing the 9 qt method would "shock" the transmission with all new fluid or something, and was suggested just to do 3 qts, wait a month, do 3 more, wait a month and do 3 more.

DW-1 has replaced the Z1 which is no longer available. DW-1 improves cold shifting and is formulated a little different

Yes you can mix, but seeing as it's the original fluid from 14 years ago, I would get the nine quarts and do the drain and refill.

My 99 had only had the AT serviced once when I got it at 180K miles(I got lucky and got every service record for the car from mile 0) I did the drain and refill x3 procedure with DW-1 and just turned 275K miles and it still shifts great

Check out Bernardi Honda (located Natick, MASS) for fluids. They
will ship. It appears that the DW-1 supplants the Z-1.
I did a tranny fluid flush several yrs ago. Ordered 9 quarts and
only used 8. Drain/re-fill required about 2.65 quarts. Mixed the
remaining Z-1 w/ DW-1 this past weekend when I changed the
half shaft. Did it sequentially: Did a drain/re-fill and then drove
a few miles before repeating.
Replace the crush washer when you change the ATF.
