Im in a process in rebuilding my enigne d16z6 motor. painted the block etc..
the question is that what can i use to paint the timing belt cover i have cleaned it good removed dirt and looks clean, but i want to make it look colored.
i have have extra high temp engine dupilcolor primer, duplicolor engine enamel, and high temp. clear coat.

can i use high temp dupicolor paint for the plastic timing belt cover . spraying high temp. primer,engine paint, and clear in order???

how will this hold up will it chip etc???

i want to paint the valve cover and have lot of extra cans of high temp. dupicolor spray paint...

 

I would say don't do it....but it's your engine... So, I have seen rattle cans made specifically for plastics, I suppose they have some special properties....maybe check the back of your can and see if its recommended for plastic?
I think anything will chip when it's applied to plastic especially, which is why I say forget it and devote that passion to some other aspect of your build.
Paint it black if anything.
There's a reason why you don't see painted timing covers typically.

 

 

You need a plastic adhesion promoter or it will flake off over time. The adhesion promoter will usally tell you what kind of sand scatch you need to have too.

 

ok im going flat black because i just want to cover the dang, oldness the cover looks. is there a plastic adhesion promoter in a spray can that i can use???

so adhesion promoter, necessary to use primer? ,
black color paint ( can i use the duplicolor black high temp paint what do you recommend, clear coat (is it necessary? duplicolor high temp. clear coat)

 

Dye it. $3. Won't chip. Don't do it in a pan that you like.

 

Never tried to dye plastics before, I know most are for fabric so I dont know how well that would work with plastic. Sems, PPG, and there are a few other plastic adheasion, Most times you need to scuff it with a grey or red scotch bright pad, apply the AP and then spray with some paint that is ment for plastic. You dont need heat resistant paint for this as the heat isnt to bad and its plastic, so it needs flex more then heat resitance.

 

Works great. I used to dye all of the plastic parts black on my RC cars when I was a kid. Nylon, delrin, hdpe, cfrp... It works great and you don't need anything special. You just simmer it in a shitty pot, the longer you go the deeper it penetrates.

 

Yeah, I thought that was probly the case...they get a little scuffy and scratched, which is why I said
Spadam...I thought u were goofin...sounds good...like wood stain or something.

 

Semigloss black fusion paint, wash the valve cover in soap and water, then spray,looks factory and will never come off,I love the stuff

 

Personally, I think the dye would work better and be more durable. I'd give that a try before painting it.

 

Fusion is for plastic, you don't need adhesion promotors for plastic spray paint anymore, the stuff sticks like glue, I've used it for years
