Default Help w/ Engine Whirring

Ever since I got my engine swapped to a JDM h22a, I've had this extremely annoying whine/hum/whirring coming from what sounds like the drivers side of the engine head.

The sound is there at idle and goes up and down with the revs. It almost sounds like a mini supercharger. Its very noticeable when driving through a parking lot or something like that.

I've taken off the ps and alternator belts and the sound is still there, so its definately coming from something around the timing belt.

Is it possible for the tbelt or balancer belt to be too loose or too tight and causing this noise? Aren't all the belts auto-tensioned? What else could be causing this?

The JDMh22's come with a mini supercharger, didnt you know that? jk
Since youve eliminated the obvious areas of trouble, you might want to check to see if your timing belt is rubbing on something. Did you put a new one on before you put the motor in? You are correct, the belts are auto-tensioned. It is possible that they needed to be retensioned. Check your timing belt for any signs of wear. I recommend letting the car idle, pop your hood, and stick your head in your engine compartment while using the throttle cable and pinpoint exactly where the sound is coming from.

Thx for the reply.

The sound definately seems like its coming from the timing belt area. Everything (belts, tensioners, gaskets, water pump) was replaced when the new engine was put in a couple months ago, but I've had the whining ever since. I've been hoping it'd just go away.

When I took the valve cover off, the timing belt was off the right edge of the gears a tiny bit (looking into the engine bay), but my friend there said that he thought that was normal. Other then that, everything looked great and the timing belt showed no signs of wear, although it could be rubbing on something.

Is it possible the noise is something besides belts? Like oil pump or some other part that I really would not like to change? Remember the sound goes up and down with the engine.

Yes the timing belt will hang over the side of the cam gears just a LITTLE LITTLE bit. Something is obviously rubbing on a belt somewhere, You might want to check your oil balancing shaft belt also.
