88 Civic Si Rustoleum Paint Job: Cost $70ish
Got sick of looking at it's mismatched colors, got way too much free time, and beer which amounted to me getting to share some before and after pictures.
I did it quick and simple. I didn't sand at all between coats, just sanded the existing clearcoat off the original red paint. Used two coats of light grey primer, three coats of blinding white paint, two coats of clear. Definately could have been tons better with waay more work, but I'm pretty happy with what I have to work with now, took one day of prep, one full day of painting, and just reassembled today. Total cost was between $70-80.
Once the paint sits for a month or so, I am going to attempt to get some more shine out of it. First time painting a car so just going off what I've read, but I'll put pics up as I find ways to improve it.
I'd say worth it if you're bored and just want to do it yourself because that's how ef owners are.

It is what it is, but man is it nicer than it looked before!

You couldn't bother to tape off/remove the parts that are supposed to be black, such as the side trim, antenna plate, lip spolier, etc?
And you couldn't do it in a share of red that actually sorta matched the chassis underneath?
Doing it yourself is completely different than doing it yourself and doing it correctly.

Ha ha! Dude, Uhhh... negative much? Ha h a ha! One, I couldn't be bothered to paint it the way you would have liked it to be painted? Nope, deal with it, you didn't think about it before I did.
Two, why didn't I paint it red? Whaaaa?! This has to be an attempt to make folks giggle, next time I'll ask for a vote. Again, nope, cuz its my car.
Ain't nobody got time for that!
Lastly, it did not look better. It had a blue hood, red paint worn to the primer in spots, and everything below the trim was flat blacked and they missed spots. Not my thing but your statement is opinion.
Fyi- tons of over spray on my tires, sorry to upset ya! Oh lordy lordy ha ha! Chill out, its a hobby.

looks good, exspecially for $70, and a lot of people don't tape off the crap because they like it all it be paint matched,
might have to do this to my hatch after I fix the Honda-rot this coming weekend!
probably going back black though so it matched the engine bay and door jams,
how long did it take to tape everything? that's what I dread doing.
assuming it was rattle can, how many cans did it take? I cant decide if I wana do rusto- or plasti-dip
thing looks a lot better with paint-matched bumpers, I still don't understand why Honda didn't paint match many of the civics

hey your car your preferences. i would have taped off the moldings and such a bit better but i agree it looks a lot better than faded red and black
Yeah, all rattle canned. It took 6 for two coats of primer, took 8 for the color but I would have liked to do a third coat, and 4 for two coats of clear and again, I think I'm going to do another coat of clear still.
Taping took about 4 hours but I went for the full frosty whiteout, I painted a lot white that is black stock so longer if you cover more.
Big help was buying a $2 thing of plastic instead of newspaper, then you can just wrap the back windows and close the front and sunroof on it to save a bit of taping.
Once the paint hardens I'm going to put a 1/4 red pin stripe on the trim going around the car.

Yeah man, if I had a shop do it I would have saved the door garnish and window trims but for the work to beer ratio, I just kept it easy ha ha! Hey I'm actually moving to Portland on the 16th of this month dcrb, how's the Honda scene and do they have strict emissions? :D
Might as well have painted your windshield molding to make it all match. And your sunroof visor. Hell, at this point, why not just paint your headlights and taillights too?
but seriously, stop being a little baby and if you don't like his car (which looks better than yours) don't comment on his thread.
it's the automotive paint version of shitting yourself at the supermarket. congratulations.
for the same $70 dollars, you could have taken a little more care and come out with a 'decent' paint job. instead you got drunk and made a mess of your car in true redneck fashion.

You got your attention through use of ill fitting, vulgar insults in true "redneck" fashion as the rednecks say, congrats!

Why so angry little guy?
DIY is good. Bad DIY is bad. You fall into the latter.
Embarrassing is being seen in a car with a bad rattle-can paintjob. At least the mis-matched panels made it look like you were trying to fix it right.
hopefully our feedback motivates you to try again and perhaps get better results next time; show yourself and the community what's really good. show us what's possible with a small cash outlay and a lot of time. the harshness of the message is meant to convey the urgency and magnitude of the failure.
now you can take it, turn around and make it better - or you can choose to believe it was a job well done and take the thread down. that is entirely up to you.
His $70 effort just made it that much harder to actually do it correctly. Especially since certain items, like the side trim, lip spoiler, etc are very difficult to find in good condition and it'll be very hard to remove cheap spraypaint from those items.
Too bad it was an Si he decided to do this on. STD or Dx or something and I'm not sure the backlash would've been there. Low-rot Si's are getting hard to find.

IMO, it looks better than it did.
What paint did you use?
If this had been a flat black jobber, you'd be getting props from everyone.
**** the haters.
Anyway, was this a rattle can or roller job?
And this is an 88 si?
I thought Honda didn't release the si until 89...

I used rustoleum, the auto primer and then just basic white, and a semi gloss clear coat. I'm happy with it, could be better, like I said but I also had a good time, and did it on my own in three days so pros and cons.
