Default R12 vs 134a opinion

I have a compressor which the clutch is catching every 360 degree rotation. Currently r12 running through as its a 92 civic.

Question is can I just replace the compressor and refill with r12? I know you can find on craigs and such.

Is this an easier fix than converting to 134a? Also, doesnt r12 work better than 134a? Right now the system isnt fully charged so it starts off cold but after about 10 minutes or so its not that cold anymore...and when the AC is on i lose most of the power in my car because the clutch is catching.

Thoughts?

r12 cools better but it is very hard to find r12 or a variant of r12 (freeze 12)

just make it simple and comply with whats available and get a new compressor, drier, expansion valve and recharge it

That was my original plan, but from all the posts on here I am reading the AC does not function well with 134a because it was built for r12. The whole point of putting money into it is to get cold air...here in texas it will be 110+ in a few weeks

well you need one for a 94 95 civic those came with r134a.

The old evap unit will have build up inside and deposits from all the years. Also the contaminates lodged inside the unit could affect the performance of your new 134 system.

compressor
drier/accumulator
expansion valve
evaporator unit
condenser <--not a must but recommended

19 oz of r134a
5 oz PAG 46 oil

be sure to LIGHTLY lube your seals with a little bit of mineral oil..dont have to but i do and alot of people do.

I had two civic in Texas and after about an hour of driving on a hot day the AC wouldn't be as cool.
The solution I found was a larger AC radiator and fan.
The problem was that it would get so hot that the return coolant wouldn't really cool down and it was straining the hell out of the compressor.

Would the evaporator from 94/95 fit on a 92 civic DX?

yes it will

a/c lines MAY need to be changed. I think it is a direct fit though.

So then why not just replace all parts with a 94/95 system since it is made for r134a?

compressor
drier/accumulator
expansion valve
evaporator unit
condenser
hoses

all parts sold nowadays will be for r134a regardless..i do not think they make r12 specific parts anymore for hondas.

If you can get r409 its a drop in replacement for r12. U wont have to replace anything. Pull a vacuum and charge youll be good to go
