Default Aussie CRX D16A8 with big issues

Hi guys,

I recently purchased an ED9 CRX with a D16A8 motor.

When I got it home I found a few little things wrong with it. Rust in the usual places, Alternator was tempremental, Battery was shot and it idled rough.

I've since fixed everything on the list except the rough idle. I have tried the following things

cleaning and re-gapping the Spark plugs that were in it
new plugs which I also re-gapped before I put them in
checked timing
checked fuel filter
checked spark
can still hear the fuel pump priming

None of which fixed the problem.

Yesterday morning I started it up and it was running quite rough on the auto-choke, then coming off the choke it made quite a loud bang followed by a few clunking noises and then stalled.

Today I put the new plugs in it and tried to start it, after about 3 or 4 turn's of the motor it felt like it stopped compressing and started turning much more freely.

After another 3 or 4 turns it spat the dipstick straight out of it's tube and about 8ft into the air.

I've spoken to a mechanic and he suspects the oil rings are shot. I did notice there was abit of oil on 2 of the plugs.

Does the Mechanic's diagnosis sound right or should I look somewhere else to begin with?

Thanks for any help,
Jay

i had a car that the oil rings were completely seized up on, and it still ran well enough. it certainly didn't do tricks like yours does.

i'd start with a compression check. if you fail there, you can just stop and start pulling out the engine. it's simple and definitive. i would call 150psi a min passing point. anything under, you can forget about running it. anything over, report back and we can troubleshoot from there.

I'm gunna guess the mechanic I spoke to was right when he said the rings are shot.

Compression test results, cold as I can't get it to start, LHS - RHS of the engine.

Dry Test

80 psi, 147psi, 82psi, 149psi

Wet Test was pretty similar didn't bother writing the results down as they were basically the same, Cylinder 1 and 3 did come up a little but nowhere close to the 150psi you've mentioned they should be around.

So this leads me to believe it's re-ring time. At the moment I'd rather not re-build the current motor (300,xxxkm or 186, 500-ish miles) as I have another engine sitting on a stand in the shed that I'm intending to re-build and tickle up in the near future.

Which brings me to my next questions.

1. If the bores are not scored or scratched can I get away with a simple de-glaze?

2. Will the D16A6 re-ring kit (link below) work for my D16A8 at all?

OR

Am I better off buying D16A1 Rings and Pistons and a D16A8 VRS Kit?

Piston and Ring Kit

VRS Kit will have to be sourced locally.

Thanks

Probably worth noting that the plugs that are consistantly oiling up are on the 2 cyilnders down in compression.

Looks like I'm going to have to put a new engine in it.

Compression is down to 0 on Cylinder 1 this morning.
