D16Z6 vs. ZC DOHC
Hey guys,
I have a 93 DX, and my motor went out recently. I decided it was time to just drop a new one in instead of continually fixing it.
I'd like a little power upgrade while I'm doing the work, so I narrowed it down to two motors, D16Z6 and ZC DOHC.
I did some searching and this is what I've found so far:
Z6: A little more top end power, easier to find parts for, better mpg
ZC: A little more torque, easier install
Is hooking up the VTEC going to add that much time and money to the swap? I've heard you need to get a pressure switch, and a solenoid, and then do some simple wiring.
Is the mileage going to vary much between the two engines? Or are we talking about 1/2 and mpg or something?
Should I get a new transmission to match? I've heard the DX tranny will work, but the taller gear ratios really take away some power. I've also heard you get better mileage with it, what would the difference be roughly?
I don't plan to do any mods in the future, it's going to be more a get from point A to point B type car, with enough power to go up hills. If I did blow a head gasket in the future, would it be that much of a pain to find a new one for the ZC?

Either will suit your needs since you're only using it for commuting purposes. The power difference between the two stock vs stock isn't much so you'll be happy with either choice. Simple choice is the Z6 since it's simpler to source replacement parts but the DOHC ZC isn't hard to find parts for, you just have to know what the equivalents are (for example that head gasket is equivalent to an 89 Integra head gasket).
I've had my DOHC ZC mated to a DX transmission and was able to average about 36-37 mpg, I later had my SOHC non VTEC mated to a Si/ZC hybrid transmission and was able to make the same ave MPG more or less. Your MPG is dependent on your gearing AND your driving habits so again, you'll be happy with any transmission outside of a CX/VX/HF geared transmission.
