I think the correct term is that I need a new layer of clear coat for my Carbon Fiber mirrors, correct? Gel Coat? If I don’t get it taken care of by the end of summer what could happen to my mirrors? Is carbon fiber one of those things where if you don’t fix it right away, it could be non-repairable in the future?
Before anyone asks me about why they’re in such bad condition, I got these APR mirrors for only $40

i heard through the grapevine that for carbon fiber, i can't use any old clear coat, is this correct?
dry sand it with 400 grit sand paper, gotcha.
and if i decide to give up on restoring this, can i just paint them? or would they continue to deteriorate? (metaphorically lolz)

Sand with 400 grit until they are smooth, then sand with 600 grit after that. 400 You still may or may not see the scratches in the right light. If it were me I would actually go to 800 but that's the OCD body man in me I guess. 800 is what a lot of body shops use to prep blend areas that need to be re-clearcoated after paint repair.
