Paint stock rims thought experiences?
I am really think about painting my stock Hx rims a dark gray using a high temp paint and clear coat. The only think I am unsure about is how does it hold up over time and how is the finish on it. I am a decent painter so I am not worried about my skills in that area I just dont want them to look painted but dont want to pay $50-125 a wheel for powder coating, I could just get a new set of 16x6 rims for that price.

it actually is a technical question, I'll have to go look I bought some really good wheel paint they sell some good stuff in spray cans now
Actually it's a Paint & Body question. It's all in the prep work. A clean surface is the key. Should hold up as long as any other painted surface if taken care of. And screw that Plasti-Dip crap.

duplicolor high performance wheel paint, I think they have it in gray, and they have a clear coat for it, just follow the directions exactly as far as coats, application times etc, I painted my old teg rims with it, and it held up very well
Here is thread with 51 pages of HX wheels painted

Vht has a graphite color they call anthracite. Like Grumblemarc said, its all about the prep. Up close you'll see any chips/paint under your paint, etc. Most guys don't bother removing oem paint (lazy IMO). Ill post up a link to mine in a few.
I will scotch brite them first and remove some curb checks. Pressure wash them with a hot water pressure washer and degreaser. Prep will be good. I will check out that Hx rim thread after work.
I dont know if you can get hold of any wheel acid I got a bottle from a friend that works in a body shop all the break dust and crap that hardened on comes right off super easy
BUT IT CAN ONLY BE USED ON PAINTED ALUMINUM RIMS anything else it will destroy

Acid destroys anything that isn't plastic....if left on for to long.

I have used duplicolor on about a half dozen or so OEM rims over the years. It is def all about prep. The results can last for several years, especially if your careful when installing and removing lugnuts(most likely area to chip and look fugly) I use aircraft stripper and strip them down(this is the biggest pain in the *** because it can take several applications before removing all paint and or powder coat. Next I use a self etching primer to cover the bare metal, then 2x coats of primer. Sand any imperfections. I always use rubbing alcohol to clean after any sanding. 4-6 coats of base color. 3 coats of clear. It will stain if a clear coat isn't used, ask me how I know.
check my thread on removing it...lol..
i hate plasti dip...cost me like 140 bucks and 11 hrs labor to get it all off of 4 wheels
-Not worried about it. I sanded them after w/180, then 320. And, yes, f#%& plasti-dip. They should rename it dip%&*t. Its good for tool handles, not painting things.
Not going to strip them down to bare aluminium just going to scotch brite the surface really well and smooth out the curb checks. Over all my rims are in pretty decent shape but not perfect. Saw some nice wheels in the Hx wheel thread. Any tips on a good way to fix curb rash makes on the rims lip?

I have actually used bondo with success surprisingly. If its mild I usually just use a file to smooth it out.
