Default input shaft bearing need replacement, need Mechanic in North GA

Hey guys, I have been using this site a lot lately and always find it so very useful after reading all the posts. After much research, finally I know what is wrong with my car.

I need to get my ISB replaced in my 95 Civic EX 1.6L (D16Z6) it has 170k miles. I drive my car a lot to and from school and would like to get at least 3 more years out of it.

Would it be best to just replace all the cage bearings, seeing that the input shaft bearing (ISB) needs to be replaced? It seems like this is a pretty common issue.

Does anyone happen to know anyone who does transmission work in the north ga area? (Gwinnett/Lawrenceville/Duluth)

Thanks so very much for all of your time!

What makes you think it's the input shaft bearing?

This is what I want you to do my friend. First search for a honda service manual, read how easy it is to work on a Honda trans and then fix your problem. If you can play with Legos and read the instructions you can work on a Honda. Especially an EG. Have a nice day

Thanks for your reply. Most things I do myself, but taking out the cv axles and removing the whole transmission seems extremely hard to do inside my home garage when I can barely get under the car as it is.

After reading so many topics and talking to others I am pretty certain it is the input shaft bearing. I have all the exact same issues and my diagnosis is the same as people who had a bad ISB. It seems like this is so extremely common with the older civics.

The best thing to do is take it apart, check the bearings then order as needed. Usually it's just the ISB that's bad, the next most common to go is the top countershaft bearing. The middle countershaft bearing, and the mainshaft bearing on the outer end of the trans rarely go bad, but I have seen it happen. The bottom countershaft bearing I've never seen fail.

Thanks for the info. Does a person have to take apart the gears/shaft in order to take out the bearings? Or can you just pull out the shaft, remove the bearings, pop back in the shaft and seal and close the trans?

Yes and no. Technically no you don't. That said there's a pretty good chance there's dirt and debris plugging up oiling passages in the shafts. You really need to remove the gears from the shafts, clean everything thoroughly and then lubricate it and reassemble.

might be cheaper/easier for you to find a good used transmission with a warranty, and swap it yourself.

i can and will rebuild it, but you would have to have the trans out of the car for me to take. i would want to do a full bearing/synchro rebuild for you to be happiest with the trans when you got it back.

pm me if this sounds doable. otherwise, there are a few import shops in the area that can do the R&R for you.
