www.discounttiredirect.com says 17's can fit 235/40 on an accord, will they?
this is for 5th Gen's by the way.
Just wondering if anyone has that or not and whether it will rub. other sites I checked say that 205 is the largest (such as http://www.tires.com)
If 235's really do fit, that would be awesome

It will depend soley on the wheel offset. Rim diameter has almost nothing to do with it unless your dealing with something 19"+.
ok, at the sake of sounding really stupid (which I already probably did), why would my offset be any different because I have 17" rims on?
If they really did fit they would make you slow. Way too wide for your Accord man. Check whalentire.com for the best tire size info. Pick a wheel of the size you want and click add tires. It'll tell you what will fit best.
your offset can vary from rim to rim. For example I have a set of Kosie K1's for my 5th gen. I can fit 225/50/15's on my car with those wheels but cannot with stock wheels.
a wider tire will not hurt the car, the heavier rim and tire will hurt it, the wider the better

Well, I know what offset is but I thought all rims on a site that are for my accord would have the same offset otherwise wouldn't the wheel stick out or be too far in the fender? How can you tell what the offset is when looking at wheels?
Ofset should be listed.

is offset usually shown in mm? I'm looking at discounttires web site and I don't see any mention of offset except the fact that they say any wheel shown for your specific car means it was checked and shown to have the right offset for your vehicle...
i have 17 x 7.5 wheels on my car...i also have 225/45 tires on them, and it's dropped a lot...they'll fit...and to womever said that those big tires will slow you down, yes they will, but at the sacrifice for handling....
here's the wheels and tires when dropped:
and here they are at the stock ride height:
