What are you thoughts on buying a 250 for my first bike?
I was looking at the gsxR 600.. but I think a 250 may be good for a few months. Worth the extra $$?

Which 250 are you looking at?
Think hard about doing this, you might get tired of it pretty quickly. I had a Nighthawk 250 as my first streetbike and it got old ast.

IMO, 250 is enough, and it should last you for as long as you please, unless you want to drive fast all the time in the highway or something. no single person can "graduate" a 250cc motorcycle. there is always something to learn.
although highways are a problem with displacement in this range (too light, sometimes too slow to pass by cars and etc).

If you want a 250 definately get a ninja. They handle great. Look for a used one you can just get the hang of with and dont mind if you lay it down. Its fine on the freeways but crosswinds can be a bitch...acceleration isnt really a problem on the freeway at least not for me. Definately great for street riding though.
if you have the resources to do so go for it. Definetely will help you as a rider. Many people just can't afford to upgrade after learning some intermediate skills. I had a ball on mine and pasted a couple gixxer6s in my day
I say buy the gixxer 600. the extra money that you could have spent on gear (leathers/ helmet/ gloves) for the 250 would cover the additional cost of the 600.
Then you can be a #1 Stunna in shorts, a t-shirt and flipflops (with socks of course)
Or you could buy the 250, buy gear and save yourself some skin/flesh. I guess that's a decision you have to make.

personally, i would get bored of a 250cc in one night of riding.
it's all up to you and what you want and what you think you can handle.

but thats just my opinion.
then again, i am looking for another bike already...but i want more agressive suspension, not more power than a 750cc to haul around my 260lbs.

250 = good bike for someone who wants to ride a bike the way they're supposed to be ridden: both wheels on the ground, dragging foot pegs. It's also a great bike to bang around on as a 2nd bike. Kinda like a winter beater, but not quite. Get a 250, learn it, love it, move up to a bigger bike if you want, and keep the 250 for ***** and giggles because they're so goddamn cheap.
Thanks
First thing i have to get is some socks for my flip flops.
I think I want to get the gsxr 600. I think I decided to learn to ride with a ninja 250 for a while. I didnt want to spend the extra money, buy a 250 get board with it and then buy the gsxr. The 250 just seems like a waste of money.....BUT ... I believe I could really use the riding experence. So.. I will be looking for a cheep ninja 250 and then take it from there.

Everyone who has replied AND has owned and ridden (everyday, not just ridden a 250 once upon a time) a 250 cc bike raise their hands...
I speak from experience. You will get bored with the power of the 250cc Nighthawk. However, the Ninja 250 makes alot more power. It has 8 valves, liquid cooling and a much higher redline. the Nighthawk 250 is rated around ~20 bhp.

*raises hand*
I own a '98 250 Ninja and an '86 VF500F Interceptor. Honestly, I like the 250 better. Like I've said in the past- it's the two wheeled version of the CRX Si- Not too fast, and not the best handler out there, but goddamn, if it isn't FUN to ride!
The Nighthawk is total crap... cable operated drum brakes, antiquated rear suspension, AIR cooled, boring styling, ect ect ect. It's a moped with an extra 200cc...

A Ninja 250 would be a sound investment. You could buy one used for $1000 and sell it for about the same price. Really, it is a win win situation. You're learning how to ride a motorcycle for free. When you sell it, use it as a down payment on a 600cc bike. From what I've heard the Ninja 250 is a really fun and agile bike.
Oh yeah, what's not fun about it when you can still rev to 14k, and do 14's in the quarter mile?!?!?

i just read your thread in members corner about getting 18 points on your license and having almost $600/month insurance bill.
i would stay away from bikes, especially if you are considering making it your primary mode of transportation.

I own a 250 ninja and have ridden larger bikes. Of course its nice to have more power with the larger bikes but i've had my 250 for a couple years now and its still great. Granted its not hte fastest thing in a straight line but it really shines in the turns. All I gotta say it dont knock it unless youve really ridden it hard.

My lawyer said I should be able to keep my license. It will end up costing me a lot of money, time, and community service. My insurance is going nuts. I need to get pos car thats cheep on insurance and get a bike.
well if you're gonna get a bike, i'd say get a 250. a gsxr600 and you'll be in jail or worse with your luck.
I have a GSXR 750 and my GF has a 250 ninja, so I get to ride it alot (and I like it). I have been riding since 15 on streetbikes and I would guess that I have over 200,000 miles of street time. If you are under 175#'s buy the 250, if you are above that, buy a EX500. A GSXR 600 is too much for anyone learning to ride.
cheep on insurance and get a bike.
So then i take it you arent going to insure the bike? with a driving record like that, i doubt you would be able to get motorcycle coverage in the state.
Just a tidbit of info, on my cbr 600 state farm wants 4500/yr. That is with a clean driving record 22 yrs old (at the time, will be 25 in dec ) good student discount, multipolicy discount etc. No motorcycle policy that i have found will cover your medical benefits it is liability and or collision but there is no coverage for the rider.

I have, but trust me, You dotn want to do it, I soiled my pampers i was so scared
I agree w/ falcon. I have a couple of friends that are local law enforcement and they all say they let motorcycles run b/c they figure sooner or later they'll end up splat. Less work for them, less time and resources wasted... same result. However I have noticed that the state troopers on I95 like to pursue speeding sportbikes and write the **** out of them. The radio gets you, they cover all the exits and how far can you go at 160mph? Then they take your bike, license, money, and arsehole
