92 accord odd behaviour/trouble codes
Hi all,
I generally am not a big user of forums, often coming on only to look at other users' issues, however I've come across something with my car that I am completely unable to diagnose, therefore I place in the hands of much more experienced individuals.
I have a 1992 accord EX-R (Canadian version) 2.2 L SOHC, that as of the last month or so has been intermittently turning the CEL on. Symptoms are as follows.
Starts up fine both cold and hot, runs anywhere from 5 seconds to 20 minutes before the light ever comes on. Generally occurs while idling at a light. Engine will stumble for a second or two (almost like no fuel getting to it), then smooth out. Light will turn on a few seconds later. Usually after the light's on, throttle response gets really jerking (obviously more so at lower RPM).
Now here's the odd part. Generally if I flip the key from ON to ACC while driving, the light will clear and sometimes not come back till another trip, although it sometimes does stay on.
Seems to be worse in hotter weather (where I live it's 30+C during the day) and comes up seldom on the colder days.
I pulled the engine codes, and am getting a consistent code 9 and occasionally a code 7 after a day or so of driving.
Any ideas? The car has relatively new plugs/wires/dist. cap and rotor. (NGK, replaced from original parts in 92) New fuel and oil filters, and a seafoam treatment about 2000 KM ago. EGR ports cleaned and replaced at the same time, new 02 sensor as well. I replaced two injectors a short while ago (pulled from a clean junkyard engine.)
Are these codes even related to the issues I'm having, or should I be looking elsewhere?
If someone has a step by step troubleshoot for this issue I would be more than happy to follow their instructions.
Thanks!

When you say code 9 and occasionally 7, I imagine you're referring to:
7 TP Sensor (Throttle Position) defective circuit or unplugged / defective sensor
9 CYP Sensor (Cylinder) defective circuit or unplugged / defective sensor
* invalid code for throttle body injection Hondas
** invalid code for V6 engines
Have you checked the function of either of these sensors?
If you find that the TPS is bad, here is a thread showing you how to change it:

Thanks for the quick reply. I checked the TPS, compared to reference voltages given by the forum (I believe between .5 and 4.5V?), no dead spots, or sticking, exactly how it should be.
As for the CYP, I have no clue how to check it, and haven't found any instructionals that actually lay it out in a straightforward manner.

One thing to make sure of is when you check the TPS to do so in very minute, gradual increments, like 0.1.
As for the Cylinder sensor, wish I could help you with that, but no idea, perhaps just replace it if you have access to a donor car?
Also, have you checked/cleaned the IACV?

Will look at the iacv, when I checked the tips I was very thorough, however I will recheck. Thanks for the input!
No access to a donor car. Junk yard is the only option and even then its hard to find a car that hasn't sat in the rain

for the cylinder sensor you can just pull another distributor if you don't want to try to disassemble and reassemble yours with another cylinder sensor.
for the tps, you can try to gently wiggle the tps wiring while the car is idling and see if the car blips ...just be careful you're trying to find a problem, not create a new one.
