99 accord Lx 4dr ---- 2 problems
1. Okay last week I went to a friends to look at his car he had for sale for DIRT cheap. We put the key in and started the car. But as soon as you let off the key from the start position the car will die. But if you hold the key forward like your going to start it the motor will stay running and the starter is not en-gauged. Kinda weird how its acting.
2. So I go back today 5/16/13 to buy the car and the owner now lost the key completely. We search high and low for the key and cant find it at all. He only had 1 key for the car. So heres my deal. Can I just take the title, go to honda have them cut a key and it work ?? or does the 99 accord have the immobilizer/ chip in the keys so the ignition will power up? Really lost when it comes to Accords. Im a Civic guy.
All info on these 2 problems will help me out. Oh and because of the problems I got the car for a retarded low low price.

1. Ignition switch is bad. Have the dealer run the vin and see if it is covered under the recall.
2. Yes it has an immobilizer. You can take the title, have a key cut, and use the brake immobilizer code to drive it to the dealer so the new key can be programmed. That will save you a tow bill. The dealer that cuts the key will provide you with the brake code if you ask.
Arm and a leg? Hardly. Keys for a '99 are cheap, less than $20. Programming will probably cost more than the key does. Local dealer here charges $25 to program keys.

First, check to see of you are covered under the recall. Call your dealer or PM me your vin and I can tell you. The donor column only helps you if you are not covered under recall for the ign. switch. It doesn't help you at all with your key problem. The pcm is what gets programmed, not the immobilizer on the column.
When I say ignition switch, I don't mean where you put the key. The ignition lock cylinder is where the key goes. The ignition switch is just the electrical part on the end of the ignition lock cylinder.

Problem is I haven't bought the car yet. So I don't have the vin. And the car is missing 2 wheels. I have a complete 2000 accord that is totaled for parts.
If the donor was a 98 or 99 I would say just swap the entire lock cylinder and the pcm. No programming, but the key would be different from the doors. The problem is that the pcm for 2000-02 is different. Only way it would work is if you swapped engine and and harness also.

What I just typed only applies to a v6. If both cars are 4 cyls, you can probably swap the lock cyl. assembly and pcm for plug and play as long as the engines are the same. Some of those engines were ulev and some were not. The pcms are not interchangeable between the two.
Swap ign. lock cylinder assembly and the pcm and see what happens. You won't hurt anything by trying. It will start and run even if the pcm isn't compatible, but the mil will stay on and it will always run in open loop. (bad mileage) Have fun getting the ignition bolts out.

Sounds like it would be easier to swap the whole column, ecm and ignition switch since I have all the parts. But at the same time after reading how the years changes between the 98-02. I might have to just bite the bullet and get a key made.
