Default 1992 Accord RPMs jumping and trouble starting

Hey guys,

Recently I have been having some problems with my 92 accord. First a few months ago I noticed the rpms jumping around, which you can see in the video below. The engine isn't actually surging or anything, just the rpm gauge goes crazy and it usually stops when it's warmed up. I have also been having trouble starting the car intermittently also. It would usually only give me troubles on hot days when leaving work. I replaced the main relay thinking that was it and it didn't help. I figured out if I just floor the car when I start it that it always fires up with no problems. Then today came around. The car started up fine this morning, but when I went to leave my driveway, it just died. All the dash lights remained on. I started it back up and it would just die right away. I probably did this about 3 times. Then I sat for a few minutes, floored the car and it started right up and drove the rest of the day with no problems. Do you think these issues could be related or are just a coincidence? The car is up to date on maintenance. Just replaced the main relay, cap and rotor, plugs and wires, timing belt, thermostat, ect sensor, and fuel filter in the last 6 months.

Any help is appreciated.

Possibly the ignition coil. My 95 honda accord had a similar problem. The tach was jumpy and would occasionally stop working. Replaced the ignition coil and fixed the problem with my jumpy tach.

Thanks for the advice. I had thought about just replacing the coil as a maintenance item anyways so maybe I will do that.

Any one else have any thoughts?

on our cars the ignition control module is responsible for rpms. I would replace that and see if it fixes the hard starting too...when you say you replaced the ect sensor you mean the two prong one under the distributor ?

Thank you for the reply. Yes, I replaced the sensor that is below the distributor. Maybe I will order an icm and see if that helps any.
