Default D16y8 ECU questions

Hello,

Im new to the board and also the world of Honda VTEC, i just purchased a 1995 4 Dr civic with an engine swap with a 1999 vtec. I asked the guy if he also swapped out the ECU with the Vtec one or not, and he said he left the standard ECU in the car. The reason i think this might be an issue is it does not seem to go into vtec mode and it also seems to top out about 5k-5500 rpm, I know these engins should rev much higher so i am wondering if it makes a difference in which ECU is in the car for all i know he left the 95 one in and is there a way to check this.

Thanks for any help and please dont beat me up as im new to all this I have always been a muscle car guy but wanted to try something different.

Yes it makes a difference, you should get the correct ECU. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_D_engine#D16Y8
You need a P2P ECU, check and see if you have one.http://www.hondata.com/techecuid.html

Also to find where your ECU is reference this.

Ok i will have to check it when i get it back from getting its new exhaust as the one on it was about 3 feet past the cat, got to love getting someone elses project they didnt feel like finishing...lol

One other question, its also now running a little rough and wants to die when i take it out of gear with the clutch, i ran it up to about 5k trying to get the vtec to engage and since then it seems like something is not right with it, i hope i didnt do anything to it..

Also, since its a 95, if they swapped the engine harness with the new engine, you could run the p2p, but if they didnt swap the harness, and kept the obd1 harness, it is VERY easy to convert a p06 ecu to a vtec ecu. check out PGMFI.org on how to convert that over :D
