hey guys me and my buddy just did a motor swap on his 96 coupe dx. the car is american so it is the equivalent of an si here in canada and it had the stock sohc 16vtec in it, and we put a 99-2000 sohc 16vtec in it. we had to change the alternator and the dizzy as the plugs are different. the motor has lagging issues when we punch the gas, i think the knock sensor may not be plugged in but the motor runs and idles fine other then that. we can take it down the road and drive normally, reach high speeds, but if we decide to floor the motor will cut out, the tach will drop etc. after it happens once the motor will will lag and the tach drops and hops up at just regular driving speeds until we turn the car off and let it cool down for a bit.

 

is your mechanical timing on and is the tps calibrated ?

 

Always check/reset mechanical timing any time the distributor is moved/uninstalled/reinstalled as B Swapped suggested. Start with the basics like your engine harness connections (mainly grounding wires) but it sounds like possibly the distributor or it's harness (tach hooks up here)

 

i have no idea if the timing is on or not, nor if the tps is calibrated, whats the prodecure to resetting your mechanic timing? is that the one i just need the timing light hooked up to my first cylinder spark plug wire? and how would i calibrate the tps?

 

no it's not that's for ign timing. take the VC off and look at the up arrow on the gear and check that the bottom(block) is also at tdc

Then after the cams are verified to be in the right place compared to crankshaft, yes, put the timing light on it and move the distributor until the crank matches spec under hood(if its still there). You might need to jump the service connector before adjusting it though, not sure. Clean up your pulley marks first so they're easier to see.
