Default Oil light problems in 1997 Honda Accord EX

Hey guys,

I'm hoping to get some help or advice from anyone here that really knows their way around Hondas. If this gets lengthy I apologize in advance, I just want to be really thorough. I have next to no car knowledge just as a disclaimer, I just want my honda to work

So here's the history of the car since I bought it. I bought the car and drove it home and got an engine and transmission swap first thing. Ever since the engine and the transmission seem to be working fine, but I have this constant problem with my oil light.

The problem used to be that when I would idle at a stop sign or something the idle would get rough and when the idle got rough the oil light would barely flash but it was in sync with the rough idle every time. When I gave the car gas, the light disappeared. Needless to say, everytime this has happened I have taken it to my mechanic but this is the problem I'm having. I've had the following repairs done and it's still not fixed. He's swapped out the EGR valve, the oil sending unit, and the oil pressure sensor out twice. He recently called an electrician who fixed a wire connected to the pressure sensor but the problem still isn't fixed.

After the electrician fixed the problem the idle got significantly better, I'd stop at a light and the idle was smoother than it had ever been. Then when I got home the oil light started full on flashing, not just in sync with the rough idle but the whole time I drove the car. Even more concerning was every time I stopped the car, the oil light would stay on completely. When I got home and parked the car, the oil light was still on and when I turned the car off I smelled burning oil. I'm gonna take it back to my mechanic asap but I have a feeling he's gonna be stumped because he swears that this should have fixed everything. I've been doing tons of reading and have been insisting to him that it's the oil pump but he says that he's done pressure tests and that it seems to be working fine.

I'm completely stumped and I just want this car to work because it's been giving me this problem for months and my mechanic still hasn't been able to figure it out. Do any of you guys have any sort of idea? I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you.

sounds like your oil is low. leaking. bad oil pump, if its the pump then you got an engine that is not going to last as long.

Definitely sounds like a worn oil pump if the oil level is good and has a new oil pressure sender.

I've been trying to tell my mechanic it's the oil pump that's wrong with the car, have been for 2-3 months now and he still seems to think that's not what it is. He says he tested the pressure and it everything is as it should be apparently. I haven't had a single leak from the car since I bought the thing so I'm not getting any leaks. My oil isn't low either because I got it from the mechanic a few days ago and they always fill her to the top with oil when I get the car back.

Everything I've read about my problem says it is in fact the oil pump. But this same mechanic is the one who swapped my engine out for a newer JDM engine. He knows the engine is newer and if the oil pump going out was gonna damage the engine you'd think he would have replaced that while he swapped the engine out to prevent any damage?

So you say it's the pump too? Maybe this guy is just finding a bunch of random things to fix to rip me off before fixing the pump? I've been telling them for months it's the oil pump and they have fixed just about everything else claiming it wasn't the oil pump. If it is in fact my oil pump and I've been driving it with the bad oil pump is my engine going to be damaged as a result? If this shop was negligent and chose to not fix the oil pump problem and that messes my engine up in the slightest I'll be taking them to small claims to get my money back. I've paid nearly 3.5k to get this stupid car up and running properly and I'm gonna be pretty upset if the bad pump is damaging my engine..

This may also be interesting to note, but I think that the problem always intensifies whenever I engage VTEC. If I keep the car under 3000 RPMs it doesn't run too rough with the oil problem unless I drive it for 20+ minutes. However, once I engage VTEC and go past 3,500 RPMs that's when the problems seem to follow.

sorry to say it like this but sounds like you are letting him push you around. if you tell him its the pump then its the pump period. bite back don't let him walk all over you set him straight. and only because the oil pump reads good pressure it doesn't mean its flowing like its suppose to.
