Icon2 economic 90 crx si

i have a 90 crx si stock with a clean interior you won't believe. the only problem is that over the years the stock d16a6 has lost some of its ponies and wont even reach 100 mph. so i was playing around with the idea of doing a mini me swap with a d16y8 head. but then i found out that my tranny had a leak coming from the input shaft seals. so my older bro that works at a salvage yard said i could get you a d16y5 vtec-e. so we are going to go ahead and pull the tranny and the d16a6 put and replace the seals and swap out the d16a6 with the s16y5. the one thing i want to know is what do i all have to get to swap a d16y5 into my crx. i was doing some research and it said that the s16y5 get abt 40 mpg in a heaver civic and in a lighter crx it would get me 45 to 50. i would really appreciate any help.
thanks

well firstly the crx/ef models in USA and japan are all obd0 and they had no d series v tec engine. the d16a6 was as good in its time to a vtec y8.
but the new d series like y7 y8 y5 are all obd1 engines .
so even so if you think its as simple as same d series engine swap. its not may seem but isn't .
look into obd0-obd1 conversions in the FAQ thread. that should help in your first step.

actually the y series motors are obd2... to properly run a d16y5 you'll have to convert to obd2 and use all the stock parts. the next best thing would be to convert to obd1, and get a chip with at least a y5 base map, but i would recommend getting it professionally tuned. the reason why the y5 gets such good gas mileage is, well several reasons actually.

first off, instead of having a wild cam, it goes from 12 valve mode to 16 valve some where around 2500 rpms (don't remember off the top of my head), depending on throttle position. secondly, (and i'm paraphrasing and condensing here) the y5 is equipped with a wide band o2 sensor that the ecu goes off of to run a lean burn mode that creates the killer gas mileage by leaning it waaaaaaay out. also, the y5 is equipped with a longer geared 5spd transmission or for the auto a constant velocity transmission, that uses bands to keep the rpms at a set spot as speed goes up to maintain the optimum mix of fuel economy and power.

I don't think you've really done enough research for this swap. If you're actually in the process of pulling the D16A6 out right now you're going to have a FUNNN time trying to get that D16Y5 to work. First off, you're not going to get a lot of the connectors to mate.

Secondly, if you're this hell bent on getting something that gets 45 to 50 MPG you might as well just go out and buy a CRX HF. I think you'd probably save money in the long run.

A D16Y5 is going to cost you about 350, OBDI ECU with a Y5 tuned basemap is going to run you another 300, wiring harness to adapt the CRX from OBD0 -> I - 300. The alternator is probably going to be OBDII as well so you're going to have to get an adapter for that too which will run you $30-40

Then you're going to need to find exhaust that will work, unless you want to run two catalytic converters on the car, so you're going to have to get a Blox test pipe (Or get an exhaust shop to weld you something) to run between the Y5 header and the CRX stock exhaust, that'll run you another 100.

And then even after all of that, you might not even be able to get it into VTEC-E or lean burn.

I know that lean burn on my Civic HX is really picky, there are a lot of different parameters in the computer that must be met before it will actually engage. Throttle position must be below ~30%, must be in 4th or 5th gear, must have intake temp above 100F, must have traveled for a set amount of distance or the car must be on for a set amount of time, etc.

I really think this swap won't be worth it.
