Default Lets discuss transmissions and fluid choices

Im in the process of buying what will be my first high horsepower honda, that will pretty much be a dedicated drag race car and may see very little street use. Im wondering what you guys are using for fluid in your high horsepower transmissions. its a stock GSR trans with carbon syncros, Quaife LSD, T1 long shifter and a CC twin disk. Im thinking about adding a cuff also but Im not sure i want to get rid of 5th gear yet. The engine has about 650 hp with room for mid 700's.

My goal is to go mid/high 9's and be able to keep the trans together as long as possible. Are there any fluids you guys recommend that will help soften the blow to the gears and the ring and pinion? I was thinking about red line lightweight shockproof but i dont know much about it other than what redline says about it. Ive always used just regular honda MTF in my transmissions before but the most power I ever made was around 350.

Any input is appreciated TIA

if you want to "soften the blow" between shifts, the tilton flow control valve is about the most cost effective way to do it.

anyone using one of these also? definitely looks like a nice piece. Definitely seems like it would help reduce drivetrain shock during launches. Still wondering about fluid choices though as far as what to use and what not to use.

A lot of people use it.

As far as fluid, don't get too crazy with the synchronizer box. We've been using Joe Gibbs manual transmission fluid in synchro missions. That or torco mtf

Have those that have used it had good success with it? has there been a noticable increase in the life of a transmission? I was looking at the Torco MTF and RTF earlier. What is the difference between the two? Are they both good for syncro transmissions?

Both Torco fluids are fine with synchronizer transmissions. MTF is a 30 weight fluid. RTF is closer to a 40 weight for viscosity and has a bit more shockproof additives than most fluids.

If it is still a "Synchro" trans, then Torco MTF.

If/when you upgrade to a dogbox, then Torco RTF.

I suggest Torco RTF for your power level.

I only use Redline fluids in my transmissions.. I am not a dealer for any of these guys, so I don't have to worry about pissing anyone off. Ask the dogbox manufacturers what they recommend, and almost every one will say one of the Redline lubricants, whether it be 75/90ns, 85/140ns, or one of the shockproof variants..

Been using Royal Purple 75/90 for years now and it does great on stock trannies.

Torco RTF seems to be the general consensus. How does the redline lightweight shockproof compare to the Torco RTF? Is it safe to say that the Redline is better for a dogbox, and the Torco is better for a synchro trans? Im just trying to find out for future reference.

Do not use redline shockproof on a synchro tranny. Not good for syncros. Redline MTL in stock trannys.

I had a libertys for 3 seasons at 930whp before I sold the fwd. used lightweight shockproof, full throttle shift, with the tilton flow control valve and tilton twin disc. Worked well. Drove it on the street all the time.

So Torco RTF is the way to go on a stock tranny? I've been using the Redline lightweight shock proof (the blue stuff) on my 100% OEM GSR tranny other then a twin disc and Quaife LSD and it worked out great for me until 4th gear broke on the dyno.

I have heard that the Redline lightweight shock proof does not work well synchros? Mith or the truth?

I've got a quart honda MTF and a quart superlightweight (yellow) shockproof and it feels pretty good.

I've started with honda ATF . Switch to redline mtf then end up with pennzoil synchromesh. Tranny has obx LSD/twin disk and has been running with it for 5+ year with over 500+hp dd.
