2007 EX Fuel Gauge Problem

2007 EX Fuel Gauge Problem
'07 Civic EX 5spd. 70k miles. The car is having a strange fuel gauge issue, wife's DD.
About every 5th time the car is started, no matter the fuel level, the guage is dark from the E to the 1/2 mark, and from the 1/2 mark to full is lit. Sometimes it returns to normal in the first minute of the car being on, and others it takes several minutes of driving to return to normal. The fuel level sending unit seems to be operating normally as well as the low fuel light.
Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting this?
