Icon2 RSX Muffler on a 96 Civic Hatchback

I want to first mention I did loads of searching on this topic. Not only on HT but on a few other forums. It seems there are many people with different answers. Now a lot of those threads were years old. Let's hope for some guidance here.

I have a 1996 Honda Civic CX Hatchback. I'm running a Tanabe RM exhaust. I've been running with the silencer in for years. However it's still about loud. Maybe I'm getting old. Nevertheless I'm highly considering a stock OEM replacement.

I found a 2004 RSX Type S muffler for sale. I was hoping to find one from a 2005-2006 but this is what came up at a reasonable price. Will this muffler fit decent on this car? I understand it will need cut and welded on. The hangers may need extended. My local muffler shop shouldn't have any problem with this.

My concern is will the larger muffler bang into any suspension components or the tire? Will the tip stick out past the bumper? I want it to have a very nice stock look so hanging past the bumper is not acceptable for me. If it's short I can remove the finisher and have them extend the tail pipe. That's not a problem. Lastly, can you get a rear sway bar on with this muffler with out it banging, tapping, rattling, etc?

Please speak up if you have experience with this on a 96-00 civic hatchback. Did the exhaust sound well on your setup? I'm very interested in picking this up. Please post photos and sound clips if possible. I'm hoping for no rasp as I do have a Vibrant resonator replacing the stock Tanabe resonator due to it just going bad.

I should also ask will there be any problems with flow or back pressure using my Tanabe pipeing into this muffler? I believe its 2 1/2" or 2 1/4".

Thanks,
Jeremy

pointless...

Its a bit to long and big for a hatch anyway...

An RSX muffler are not performance inspired whatsoever... It is built and designed to create a specific sound.... Thats it...

Throw it out, thats all its good for..

We had this same question a few weeks ago and it's by no means an upgrade someone even posted a cut up one. a vibrant stealth is a perfect option i have it with my skunk2 exhaust and love the deep tone it has. or get a yonaka WS2 those are very quiet.

I was looking at the yonaka. If I buy another a back it may be that. However I can't find any clear pics of how the muffler sits on a hatch. The ones I did it appears to stick past the bumper. Not my taste. The muffler also has a large tip and has no silencer in case it's too loud for my liking.

I don't know a lot about the rsx muffler. I know I came across a good price on a clean looking muffler that would be pretty quiet and give a clean oem look. That's what u was after.

Any other oem mufflers that would work and be a better choice? If anyone e is using the yonaka on an Ek hatch please direct to photos and or sound clips.

just throw the stock exhaust on i'll bet you have a D-series or B16 in there. won't make a difference imo especialy with the D

Currently I'm still running the mini me swap. However I have a b18b I'll be dropping in soon. I don't have the stock exhaust anymore. I'll continue reading to explore my options.

That muffler sounded like **** as will any STOCK muffler with an aftermarket exhaust system. it's meant to muffle the noise output with a stock resinator, cat and pipe diamiter not to mention it's restrictive. this whole stock muffler with 2.5'' exhaust idea .

vibrant stealth is a much simpler solution.

That 07 SI muffler sounded just like..... An 07 Si....

The RSX mufflers are longer than the late model Civic mufflers...

The RSX muffler is closer to something from a CRV...

im not going to argue ALL the factors that will effect how well the muffler handles the sound so to say. Si with k20 all stock with stock si muffler or D,B with 2.5 exhaust and other mods. there's going to be a differnce in sound the normal Si sounds better than that hatch

I have the yonaka on a 92-95 hatch so I wont post pics cause it wont be relevant. But yes, the tip sticks out past the bumper (not my taste either), I cut it off and replaced with a 2.5" tip. Even with the larger 4.25" tip, there is no need for a silencer. The densely packed larger resonator and densely packed muffler makes it extremely quiet. Here is a WOT sound clip of it with the large tip. Car has no cat and is still ubber quiet. Vtec crossover is hardly detected.

Thanks for the reply JuggerNaut-CTR. With the EG setup was there any room to shorten the exhaust a few inches to tuck the muffler back a bit more to keep it under the car with our interfering with any suspension components?

I agree the clip sounded good. Thank you for posting. If I can get it tucked under the larger tip may not bother me as much. I have heard some people state when they removed the tip the sound changed for the worse.

If you intend to move it back a little further, the back of the muffler will be too close to the subframe. I just went out and checked and there is about an inch and a half of clearance from the back off the muffler and the sway bar mounting bracket. Don't know how much it will differ on a 96-00 but as far as I know the axleback portions between 92-00 hatches are the same.

With original tip...

With the smaller tip...

The sound did change with the different tip, but hardly noticeable. For sure didn't make it worse imo. Only vid I have with the smaller tip is was with a different camera and open airbox so that wouldn't be relevant to share. But still sounds good.

Thanks for the details and the added photos. The new tip you put on looks good from the profile. It looks very similar to the RSX Type S tip I was looking at. Do you have a shot from behind the car?

When you put the new tip on did you just cut off the old tip, weld new pipe to reach the bumper, and add the tip? Also, what tip is it?

Ill get a shot from behind when I have a chance.
For now its just a generic tip you get from an auto parts store and screw on. And yes, I just cut the old tip off.
Tomorrow or Friday I am going have the tip, or a different one welded on. And with the old tip gone there is more gap from the top of the tip and bottom of the bumper hole as you can see. Either gonna try shorter rubber hangers to shorten the gap, or shorten the hangers all together.

Good stuff. Keep me posted. I'm curous how it ends up in the next few days.

With the tip hanging out the back like that just screams for kids to want to stand on it.

I personally don't have kids. But there is no off street parking at my office. So my poor hatch has to sit a block and a half away along the street. I hate it but what do you do.

That red hatch sounded bad to much rasp and he wasn't even gasing it.

It will sound different inside the car i had a old vibrant muffler on my car sounded great in car. Friend revs it for me I hacked it off as soon as i got home.

not saying it HAS to sound bad but i've heard a fare share of crappy ones. not trying to argue either just my .02

You did say ANY stock muffler with a aftermarket exhaust will sound like ****...so Im failing to notice how your story with your vibrant muffler has anything to do with what you said...

I know your not trying to argue, but you sure as hell aren't making any sense. Yes the red hatch sounded like ***...but you would hear the rasp inside the car as well. Was just pointing out that your post was not accurate, considering mine has a stock muffler with aftermarket exhaust and doesn't sound like ****. All depends on what shape the muffler is in internally.
