Default Finally Getting My Turbo Set Up Going

Hell must of froze over cause after years of talking about it...I'm finally getting my turbo set up going =]

I don't have very many parts at the moment, but I'll continue to post photos as I get more stuff and have more updates to share.

This is what I've got so far...

Cheap cast iron log manifold. I have I feeling I'm going to buy another one with a center wastegate hole. I didn't care at first cause I was going to keep the internally gate, but now I think i'm gonna go external

Got a blow off valve and some piping thanks to my friend Cody. I've got some plans to change the colors on this thing. Chrome and purple will not match my engine bay very well

Got a test pipe to replace the restrictive cat thanks to my friend Jose. This is already on my car as of last night and somehow my exhaust sounds even better

I got my turbo (Stock rb20det turbo) =]! Thanks to my friend Taylor. I should of taken a photo of it just on the ground, but I forgot. So here it is test fitted onto my car.

I had to shave quite a bit off my block to get it to fit, but it fits & I can keep my ac.

I went ahead and started pulling the turbo apart to clean it

Blades all look good. No chips or scratches

Compressor housing is dirty on the outside, but is pretty clean on the inside. No sludge or oil which tells me it wasn't leaking

After the compressor housing is all cleaned up I'm gonna have it powder coated black just to make it look a bit better and match my engine bay. I still need to pull the exhaust side off and clean that out

Radiator and condenser blew. She looks so depressing right now =[ (this was before I could the condenser out). They rubbed against each other and created a hole. I guess after I test fitted the turbo I didn't notice when I put everything back in that they were rubbing.

Oh I also removed those ps cooling lines to make room for the intercooler

Went ahead and mounted my intercooler today. It might be moved up or down a bit once I see how it sits behind the bumper, but this is generally it's finally spot. (ignore the piping, that was just shoved on to see if it would clear where the bumper mounts)

Nevermind....I just had it up too high before. I thought that was right, but I guess it's a smart idea to leave the support mounted and then try to see where the intercooler should go. Lesson learned on my part. I've still got to make the lower support for it and then throw the bumper on to see if the grill hits it. Oh and fyi it wont look this shitty when everything is done. This makes my car look dirty and rusty

^wide angle lens makes it look like ive got a crazy amount of camber...I don't

Talk about stealth! I didn't have to cut a single thing =] The only mod I had to make was to relocate the horns up a bit so the piping didn't hit them

Two more pieces I can check off my list, thanks to my friend Lance for these parts.

Oil sandwich plate, and oil feed line/fittings (yes it fits into my turbo)

Ok so thanks to Tater & MrGtiiiii for the piping. I was able to route the cold side of the piping today =] I had to cut a few of the pipes and a piece of the car but other than that it was a smooth process. I'm hoping I can find someone who can weld aluminum that way I can get rid of a few of these couplers. I still need to get some more piping for the hot side of it, but I wont be able to figure that part out until the turbo is mounted again.

I want these 2 couplers welded for sure

That piece you gave me Cody fit perfect right onto the trottle body. The bov is upside down, which I think is cool cause it's hidden, but if it's bad to have it upside down then I'll change it

The coupler right under the strut bar I'd like welded as well. I'll leave the one down near that hole where the pipe goes threw that way I can take it out & put it in...obviously

I'm also either going to paint the piping all black or get it powder coated, not sure which yet. Depends on my wallet at the end.

I ordered my half size Goautoworks radiator (with -6an bung for the water return for the turbo) so hopefully that will be here by the end of the week so I can get my car back on the road for now.

That's all I've got done so far. I'm hoping to have this turbo set up done by the end of the year which my seem like a long time, but I'm going slow with this. I don't have a job right now...not sure if I mentioned that already or not (i just copied all this off another site I had posted it on). But I haven't paid a single dime for any of this turbo stuff so far, so it going slow is fine by me =]

I collected turbo parts for four years before I finally hit boost for the first time today. it's worth it and you're looking good, keep with it.

Thanks guys. I hope this doesn't take me 4 years to finish lol. Like I said I'd like to have it done by the end of the year, but i'm not rushing things. Once the radiator comes in I'm gonna throw it in and continue driving it na until all this is done.

I guess I should give you guys a bit of specs on the motor...It's stock with bolt ons. It's just a standard b16a. Exhaust is a full stainless rsr exmag which I'm keeping for the turbo setup. I know the piping is a bit smaller than what most people would run, but it sounds amazing and I don't wanna lose that sound. I forgot to mention it's on rc 550's right now and tuned on e85. I did that last July for emissions reasons...and it smells good =]

Oh believe me man I've pretty much got my camera glued to my hand, I'll make a good one when it's all done. Here is one a made a few months back. Figured I'd post it as a before video and then make one as the after when it's boosted

I dynoed 125hp last May on Boost Logics dyno...(which still bums me out...I don't wanna talk about it lol). So if I break 200hp with this I'll be shocked

what did you expect from a 1.6l making 160hp at the crank? I dont know how there dyno is calibrated, but your car would read different on say a dyno jet vs a mustang dyno and even further a dyna pack. those rb turbos spool pretty damn fast. I would be worried about higher rpms, but should be interesting to see everything put together.

I expected at most 140, but yea it was a dynojet. My friend who I got the turbo from had it on his stock rb20 in a 280z and he revved that thing to 8500 all the time. The turbo never had issues and doesn't have any shaft play. I should be alright on my motor since I rev to around that same range

I have no idea man that was just about a year ago. I can hardly remember things from last week.

Got my radiator today =] I'm happy and bummed about it all at the same time. The radiator looks great. Go-Autoworks did a nice job on it. I'm bummed about the fact that neither of my fans will work on it.

This drain plug hits the lower cross member which is a bit of a problem. Once it's installed I wont be able to use this to drain because of that reason =\

-6an fitting for the water cooled part of the turbo

Fancy

So after a bit of thinking I think I've come up with a solution to get around the fact that it rests on the cross member. I'm gonna remove that drain plug and buy a standard plug for it. I'm gonna buy a cap for that 6an fitting since i'll be using this radiator while i'm still n/a. I figure I'll just use that 6an fitting as the drain since it's on the side and isn't interfered by that cross member. I still have to make some sort of bracket for the top and bottom to hold it in. I was gonna do that today, but after driving around for an hour looking for the store that sells the an fittings with no luck...I said **** it and drove home. I'm just not in the mood to mess with it today

I also ordered my Walbro pump which should be here Friday =]

I went all Macgyver on this **** today lol

Alright so today's update. I went out to find that Austin Performance place and after a friend gave me the secret treasure map directions I found it. I bought my -6an cap and the plug for the drain hole. Total came out to around $8 which I was happy with. Then when I got home I got to work...

So to solve the problem of my stock fans not lining up I took the old radiator brackets I had made and repurposed them into fan brackets.

It might look stupid and ghetto, but I feel it was a great solution to a problem. Not to mention it was free. (I WILL get a slim fan for when the turbo is on...this was just so I can get it back on the road n/a for now)

Bottom mount. Only did this one because the other one would of hit the water outlet. Again might look ghetto, but the fan does not move at all

Made a brand new mount for the top. I had to drill a new hole in the core support for it, but that wasn't a big deal. It's not visible in this shot, but I sanded all those brackets and this mount down to a shinny mirror finish. Just to make it look a bit better

How it sits in there. It's perfectly level...even though the photo is not. I spilled some coolant which is why it's wet down at the bottom...oops. Half size takes less than I thought it would

It's weird to see an n/a engine bay in a turbo thread. I'm slowly getting there though and I can't wait to just get in and drive it again, even though it will still be n/a for the time being

I tried my best to not have it look ghetto. I see soo many people with half size radiators all half assed and crooked. I'm happy with the way it came out

My Walbro pump will be here sometime tomorrow...well today now since it's after midnight. Once I install that then I can drive her again =] She needs a very well deserved bath. I haven't driven her in a month =[

Anyway, next step for me is to get another condenser and fix the ac system. After that I will get back to buying more turbo stuff...once I have some more money

Most likey not
Going to watch the fight plus I haven't taken my teg a long road trip pass new braunfels, I guess I'm nervous since I'm turbo and all. But I'll be getting an oil cooler setup real real soon! I think it's needed in our state.

So my friend bought me some gauges for helping work on his car.

Got my boost gauge and oil pressure gauge in the mail yesterday so today I decided to figure out where they needed to be mounted. I figured since the car doesn't have ac anymore...who needs vents? So I made another carbon fiber piece. Unfortunatly the boost gauge does not appear to be working correctly =[ It reads 22 psi when the car is off, and 11 psi at idle. My friend bought these for me off some guy so kinda sucks that it's not working right. I don't know if the oil pressure gauge works or not cause I'm not gonna put that on until the sandwich plate goes on for the turbo. Anyway, here are some photos of it

^That's real carbon fiber btw, not wrap. Cut it all out from an old hood

OP, if I'm not mistaken, you have a T25 turbo and a T3 manifold. You are gonna need an adapter in order to be able to bolt the turbo up to that manifold and you also need the have the flap for the internal gate to be welded shut to run the Tial external gate.

I had posted...I think I had posted that I'm no longer going with that turbo. My friend who gave it to me decided he wanted it back. So now I have no turbo. But no, that's a t3 flange. It basically has t28 internals but with a t3 flange. Since I'm gonna run a different turbo now, that's why I got the Tial wastegate, but thanks for looking out

Installed my oil pressure gauge today =]

(Other hole is for the boost gauge)

I also ordered a new cast manifold that has the wastegate hole centered over all 4 runners

I dont know if it was mentioned at all, but those RB20DET turbo's have Ceramic exhaust wheels and tend to fall apart if pushed past *I think* 10psi.
