Default 93 civic missing bad around 2k rpms

I traded for a 93 civic ex. Makes my 2nd one now the other is a DX. The guy said the ex had a motor change. I looked at the motor its a d16z6 I'm not sure if that's the same motor that came in the civic ex originally. Anyways driving the car mainly in 3rd and 4th gear the car misses horribly around 1.5k to 2.5k rpms. An kinda smooths out after that but not much. Check engine light is on. I'm going to auto zone tomorrow to see if they can check the engine light out to see what codes it is throwing. I changed the plugs thinking they might not have been changed. The old plugs was white on the tips. I changed the plugs and still the same. Any ideas?

Get a timing gun and check your ignition timing. This could explain why it favors certain rpm's.

I'll try that later today when I get off work, how does the plug wires go? Its a d16z6. I know on the valve cover from left to right its 4-3-2-1. But on the disbutor they have it going from bottom left clockwise to bottom right 1-2-3-4, is that correct?

Standing on the passenger side of the car looking at the dizzy starting from bottom left clockwise to bottom right is 1-3-4-2 which is also the order the cylinders fire. If yours is wired 1-2-3-4 that would certainly cause a mis-fire!

Timing or faulty ignition components, check the distributor rotor, cap, and wires.

Plug wires are in the right place, took a second look at it earlier today. I drove it again, to see when it does it more. Mainly in 4th gear at 2k rpms is worse, 3k rpms an up its not so bad unless you give it gas then it acts up again.

Did you ever pull the codes? It's an OBD1 car, it's stupidly easy to do yourself with a paperclip. Check the FAQs sticky.

You can pull the CEL without turning the car off. Run the car until the CEL comes on, follow the steps in the FAQ, post the codes.

So when I was looking for the connector to put the paper clip in, only plugs i seen was one grey one that was plugged into the blower motor, a green one that wasn't plugged up, a big grey one that had multiple wires, and a brown that was beside it. Both of them was also plugged up. On the forums it said to look for a grey plug. Didn't see any unless its the one in the blower motor

I believe on the 93 it's in the green plug. There should be 2 smaller plugs in there. You want the grey one.

Checked the codes, when I hooked the paper clip in the cell would stay on for a 1 then 7 fast ones. And repeat doing that, so I didn't know if it meant 7 or 17. But 7 is tps and 17 is vss. Also I have a 93 civic DX 1.5 is there any parts I can swap to see if it makes the car run better and stop missing? Also there was oil in the air intake duct when I was cleaning the throttle body
