I just found a decently priced high output one for $179.

How difficult would it be for me to swap mine out myself with just basic hand tools ?
I DO have a Haynes manual.. but have never done it before.

I guess I just have to loosen the belt and unbolt it ? Put it back on the reverse I took it off ?

that sounds like the ebay one. Your going to have to remove the pulley which can be a bitch w/o an air wrench. If you took it somewhere they'd charge you an hour labor (to remove and install the whole thing). I hate reman'd alternators. They can be very inconsistent....if you do buy one make sure it's been reman'd here in the states/japan or canada and comes with a great-great warranty.

i'd rather just pull a complete OEM Denso (or Hitachi - whatever) unit out of the junkyard or a dismantler from a lower mileage car.

WAG: I would just buy a new/remanufactured unit, if its not the fuse.

ESCOBAR: Does the high current come with a pulley? If not, it will be very easy to change. Just loosen the adjustment bolt, remove the belt and wires, the take the other bolts out and swap the new one in.
If it doesnt come with a pulley, you'll need to put yours (original) on it.

If that's the case and the problem is definitely the alternator.. I bet the problem inside the alternator is burnt diodes in the Rectifier..

if it has more than 100,000 miles get a remanufactured one from autozone lifetime war. i got mine for my car for 100 + tax. including the trade in of your old alternator. all you need are some good socket wrenches and a torque wrench.
