S20-B000, just swapped noises/issue
here's a bit of backstory:
'93 EH2
JDM D15B Vtec
S20-A000 (old trans, worked fine.. but horrible ratio)
S20-B000 ("new" trans, swapped this Saturday)
BRAND NEW axles
Clutch kit >5,000 (was fine before swap)
I traded some misc parts for this EX trans, because I was running a CX trans and the gear ratio was terrible. I swapped everything in and took it for a test drive. Every gear was smooth as butter BUT I did notice a strange noise on the passenger side.
The sound, to me, sounds similar to a supercharger whine and only occurs from 2nd-5th gear. It gets louder as I accel. So, I added a little more MTF and the sound is still as loud as before. As I was coming home from work I stopped at a stop sign and noticed a lot of smoke pouring into the cabin. I wasn't sure if it was possibly from an issue within the trans or if maybe I had spilled some fluid...
I am more concerned with the noise itself than the smoke, because I feel 90% sure I spilled a little fluid. Any ideas? I've seen SOOO much stuff--
"It's your throw-out"
"It's your syncros"
"It's this..."
"It's that..."
I am really only looking for responses from trans gurus! If you don't work on transmissions for a living, or build race cars, please keep your guesses to yourself. Thanks in advance!

How does the fluid look, any flakes? How loud is the noise at cruising speeds when light on the throttle?
A whine that isn't caused by the pitch of the gear teeth is usually caused by a damaged gear or gear/shaft misalignment.

Fluid is brand new. i don't have a garage or tools so i have to drive on it for another day (12 miles both ways) to get to work.. so I cannot check for flakes.
the noise has since quieted in 3-5. but is still noticeable in 2nd. i am thinking i am just gonna have to source a new trans and do the swap again at this point..
