Would you buy- 2000 gsr w/ 7,500 for 14,ooo? (salvage)
Hi- I found a 2000 gsr (SSBP) with 7,500 miles. It has leather, etc. The car has a salvage title, and I talked to the guy who is selling it- he said the front had some sheet metal damage and needed to be repaired. IS this a good deal, and what does the slavage title mean? (I have a 98 LS and by selling my car I could do this pretty much for an even swap)
Thanks guys- that's what I figured (and the voices inside my head told me too) but I just wanted to see what the consensus said as well.
I agree and can add some personal info. I've owned a salvage titled car and you don't want anything to do with them.
OH, and BTW, the guy selling it is full of ish if he said that "it only had a little sheet metal damage". In order for an insurance company to total a car, the repair damage has to be like 50-70% of the car's value (depends on insurance company). A 2000 GSR (depending on when it was wrecked) was probably worth at least 17,000-18,000...so you're looking at an accident that would have cost ~$8500-9000 to repair (and thats the low end of the scale--50%, if the insurance company was of the 70% variety, that would be $11,900-12,600 worth of damage! ) That's alot of damage!!
Stay away from this sale and tell that guy to go rip somebody else off
Hope this helps

hey hey hey...lets not bash all salvage title cars. i bought my 95 with 19k miles (checked out) almost threee years ago and aside from my own stupidity i have not had any major problems with the car at all. it now has 87k. the price your talking about is pretty high. a lot of my friends buy cars at autcions and fix them up themselves to make a few extra bucks on the side but 14 is too much. that car cost him no more than id say 8g.

Just wondered, I am stearing clear, and figured it had to be a lot of damage to get slavaged out. Darn sad someone toasted a 2000 with just 7K on it!!
if u can get pics of the original damage and it really is minimal or as the seller says it is, i'd say talk him down a bit and go for it. it really does save u a boatload of $. the car doesn't necessarily have to be totalled to a point where the damage is uneconomical for the insurance company to fix.
i actually did lots of research on this before i bought my teg new (cuz it was a really good bargain too). just take into account that it will be more difficult for u to sell it in the future and insurance may not be all that much cheaper.
good luck!

Just say NO to a salvage car.
I bought one once, and ended up spending 2500$ getting the wiring system fixed due to corrosion.
It was my first car and I didn't know better. I learned the hard way.

like i said before 14 is way too much but just because a car is salvaged/reconstructed it doesnt mean that the car is crap.

I got my 99 EK in flawless condition with 9k miles on it for $6500. The only problem with a salvage car is trying to re-sell it if you ever decide to get rid of it. Also, most banks will only loan up to low book on a salvage title vehicle.
If you buy the car from someone you trust, and who will be honest with you about the damage, and you're comfortable with that, then go for it.

That's a good decision!I know some of these guys have had some good luck with their salvage titled car and that's great!!...more power to them
..... BUT, the majority of salvage titled cars should have never been put back on the road! They should've been scrapped and sold for parts!
Hell no, it's way overpriced for having a "Salvage" title.
I bought my 2000 GSR w/32k directly from a Salvage yard, viewed the damage and had it all fixed up.... labor, parts, towing.... and it only cost me a little under 10 grand. This guy is making some serious money on you. Don't pay more than 8grand for that car.

14k for a salvaged title is a bit much. i know that now, because i bought my 98 LS with 9k for 12,500....now that i know a lot more after three years, i almost (not quite) regret having got the car.
i don't think that you should NEVER buy a salvaged car, but buyer beware..inspect everything until your eyes bleed.
for the record, the only engine problem i had was a damaged evap canister, which was soon replaced. it runs strong and good as a champ now..at 42k miles....we'll see what's up later on though.

dont' buy salvaged cars. no matter how nice they look. stay away! hehe
My advice would be to drive the car and examine it fdor yourself see if the is a pill to either side or excessive wind noise
my car isnt salved, but if i could find a car with less mileage in awesome condition, with just a salvaged title, i would, as logn as teh deal is good..
i bought my car to drive it, when the engine dies, ill swap, etc.. i dont plan on selling my car, and down the road when i buy another car, ill keep this car for auto-x events and stuff.. so its not an issue for me if it was salvaged..
btw that price is a quite high.. if your interested see how low he would let it go for.. remind him its salvaged and that you could never get much back from the insurance company if it gets stolen/trashed, etc..
