Default 97 Accord sepaker question

My buddy has an aftermarket Panasonic head unit in his 97 Accord with factory speakers. While listening to the radio, the sound just cut off all speakers at one with no "blow" or "popping" sounds at all. Radio still works with no sound.

Does anyone have any type of troubleshooting suggestions or do you need any more specific info (i.e. radio model number, speaker make/model, etc.)?

TIA! Andy

sounds like one of the speaker wires are grounding out, causing the internal amplifier to shut off

I was thinking pos. and neg. could have connected and caused a short. But wouldn't that just result in a blown speaker (one only, not all four at the same time) or radio fuse? I'm confused.

Would the radio amp just go like that? If so, would he need to replace the radio?

No, if the speaker is grounded it will shut off the internal amp. Like a protection mode, try disconnecting the speakers one at a time. Or if you have the time disconnect all of them and use a seperate speaker to test all of the speaker outputs. If you have a multimeter, just set it to continuity and test all of the wires to see which one is grounding out.

Ok thanks guys! I just let him know. He's going to try the: "disconnect one speaker at a time" method since I don't have time to show him how to test for continuity. Now, once he's finds the culprate speaker (if this is actually the issue), does he have to replace it or just correct his faulty wiring connections?

If that's the problem i would tell him to see if he can see where it's grounding out. If not it would just be easier to run new speaker wire. Also make sure the speaker terminals aren't grounding out.
