i'm in the process of changing the timing belt and water pump. I took the water pump off and it has 4 bolts, and one of the bolts is smaller than the other 3 bolts. Does anyone know where that smaller bolt goes? I'm confused. HELP!!!!!

 

I looked at my manual and it says for del sols (assuming stock engines) that one bolt is LONGER than the other 3 and that it also holds in the timing belt spring tensioner.

If you have a swap to a B18 or B20 (Integra or CRV)they just note to pay attention to the different size bolts because they hold down different items. No more specific than that.

I'm looking at the Haynes manuals.

 

No, the water pump itself has 4 bolts and one of them is shorter than the other three. Those bolts has noting to do with the tensioner. I'm just wondering where would that shorter bolt go? The holes on the water pump look the same.

 

It's either the left bottom or right top but I can't remember. Been a couple months since I've done one. Thread the bolt in with the others a couple threads and see if then all have the same gap till they snug down.

 

One of the holes will be shorter than the other. I think it's either the left bottom or the right top

 

Damn! Well I put the shorter bolt in the button left. All the bolts got tight, so hopefully it is that hole.

 

bump for an answer! I still haven't put everything back together.

 

Okay I found the answer. For the future reference the shorter bolt goes to the 7-o'clock position on the water pump. Thanks everybody!

 

im pretty sure when u put it back together you put all the bolts in the holes all the heads should be sticking out the same. it only goes one way... next time pay attention while removing it.

Use a correct torque wrench (inch lb.) and torque those to spec or prepare to hate yourself and want to die when coolant is dripping from your timing cover.
Also hopefully you used an OEM replacement pump (from Honda) or prepare for possible heartache.
