Hi everyone,this is my first post as I just did a search for help and found this forum so I signed up.
I have a 2001 Accord with 304,000 km on it. (Just broken in)
I started to smell gas fumes around my car and tracked it to a wet spot at the front of the gas tank. I checked all the fuel lines under the car and also through the inspection hatch in the trunk over top of the tank and all look good. It look's like the leak is on the seam at the front of the tank. I'm guessing it will be a tank replacement deal which looks like a lot of work. Just wondering if anyone had this problem and if you have any advise or easy fixes for this problem. thanks in advance.

 

not common at all, you must have hit something. There is no easy fix. You have to replace the tank.

Actually its fairly common in 10 + year old cars. Had a couple leak at the seam (front and rear) and just 2 years ago my college sons 1999 Accord right in the middle of the tank on the bottom! (nowhere near a seam, did not look damaged either but may have taken a knock at some point). Ultimately a new tank is best but I repaired all three with JB Weld! In older cars it depends on the overall condition whether or not its viable to replace the tank.

None have leaked in over 6 years since the first repair! there are many such products in the auto-parts stores to patch a gas tank, just be careful to follow all safety precautions when working around Gas Tanks, no electrical powered sanding! Just get the gas level below the leak, let the area dry and clean well as you would with any patch. Follow the instructions on the package to prep the area! Good luck. John

 

JB weld quick fix versus the cost of you having to have your car/truck towed really makes it easy to figure out which option is best.

you're going to jb weld it let it cure for a few days...don't take any chances of it leaking and leaving you stranded.

 

Thanks Dubhlaine, that sound like it's well worth a try and sence this is my winter car, and winter is nearly over I'll be able to lay it up to make the repairs. Is there only one type of JB Weld or do I need JB Weld just for gas tank repairs? Also what is the best way to clean up the area that needs repaired. It looks like the leak is on the seam at the front of the tank.
