Default bad wheel hub?

ive been moving my car around without axles around the drive way and one day when i was jacking it up there was excessive play in the hub. its pretty bad. people are telling me that its normal and will go away when you put axles in. i just wanted some input before i put my motor back in.
thanks

when the axel is put in and tightened it compresses the two halfs of the bearing and takes up the play
if it doesnt fix it with the axel in then the bearing is worn out

Why are you bumping your thread? You already got the answer. Bearing play should be checked with an axle installed.

if you moved it without axles in, your bearing is probably toast.
