Upgrade the cam, increase compression, boost it. But if i were you i'd swap a B16 or B18(vtec) in there and have way more fun.

Turbo the d or swap. Don't waste your time with bolt ons.

Don't listen to this. The first things the uninformed will say is to install a bigger cam and increase compression by swapping pistons. However, this will do nothing and may in fact decrease power without the proper tune and in the grand scheme of things your car will still be slower than a CRV. You cannot make power N/A on a D-series without a serious expenditure of cash and even then a regular stock D-series with an entry level turbo kit will blow it out of the water

Boost or swap.

you should turbo it if you want more power, if you want it in a daily driver just keep it the way it is; y8's are fun. on a side note, does anyone know if i should resurface the block if my motor overheated?

No need to resurface the block unless it's obviously warped, the head should be resurfaced.

Subaru's are more fun and powerful in the end. Honda's are just like universal lego pieces that can fit on each other and look nice for cheap.

how competent are you with honda motors/engines and cars in general? im not trying to be condescending at all but i need to make a decision asap (its my dd for school) and if its necessary i will do it but if it isnt absolutely necessary then i don't want to spend the money. it overheated once that im sure of (the radiator fan gave out spontaneously) and when i bought the car the owner had the head off (im assuming he overheated it) so idk

I can relate.
I bought my Civic in my junior year of high school, it was my DD for work and school too and the head gasket eventually blew after overheating over time. I spent a month repairing it myself and changed the headgasket in my front lawn from having no prior mechanical knowledge, now i'm still a senior in high school and have no major problems with my Civic at all, it's a fun and cute little reliable thing. I leveled the block with a straight edge, it was fine. Usually heads go out first on most honda's. Shave the head, do everything else in the right order, make sure you torque down the bolts at the right torque measurements and in the right tightening order. And above all, don't forget the dowel pins. DO NOT FORGET THE DOWEL PINS. Anywho, back to OP's topic about D16Y8s ...

1) Stock motor, be limited to ~200hp
2) Low Compression build, turbo and have a higher HP possibilities
3) Motor swap - B, H, K, etc;
4) Get another car.

N/A D-series build isn't an option worth investing in.

Boost or swap, anything else is a waste.

It's a cast iron block, the head is aluminum, the head would need to be shaved. Anywho, back to OP's topic about D16Y8s ...
Block is aluminum.

Yep it sure is and if it overheated, the head is guaranteed to be warped at least .002(two thousandths)and most resurfacing is at least .003... hmm your going to chance it, go ahead, no pun intended

I'd Google both of those questions, it's easier than waiting for a response. If you really need the head checked, a machine shop could probably check it for cheap for you. In the same boat as you looking for a job and being stuck in school

Of course there's no information on pricing. You have to call up or go to a shop and get a quote/estimate LOCALLY.

You can get a precision straight edge at your choice of hardware stores, or at a campus book store if you have a college near by with an engineering program. I got mine at the UVA book store.

It's kind of a specialized tool. Not something most parts desks would have laying around. They're pretty easy to find once you know where to look

Omg all the time you wasted looking for a straight edge could've been checked @ machine shop already- us veterans, what do we know...
