headed home from work about 1/2 a mile from home something on the passenger side of the car exploded and made the sound of falling to a million pieces

I got it home and popped the hood and there was grease sprayed everywhere I could find no cuts on the upper passenger side cv joint but I grab the base closest to the transmission and there is play about a 1/4inch up and down

what is it. its dark I can go back out and poke at it more



car is a 96 del sol si 5speed

 

Had my pass side axle break on my way home about a month ago. Made a loud bang then car didn't move.

So does your car still drive?
And check the axle in some light.
