Default 2000 Accord Transmission Question

Dumb question here: what's the purpose of a lock up solenoid.

also .. just replaced a rebuilt transmission, and the D light still hasn't appeared.. scanned codes.. nothing.. and the shifter is loose meaning it wont lock in d... (bought it that way)..

it can be pushed into any gear without pressing break. 4 cyl. accord...

heater core was replaced before i got the car.. also steering wheel is not straight...

thx

I think it's so it can't come out of gear while parked.

You have to have the key in the ignition and the ignition has to be in the ready position in order for the shifter to move.

do you think this is the reason why my shifter can go into gear without the key in the ignition?

Yes I believe so, in fact I was just in that area of my Gen4 AT.

Not sure about your Gen6 (My gen6 is MT and my gen4 is AT) but my Gen4 AT has that shift lock mech just to the right of the AT shifter.

There's a metal box that contains an electrical plunger that connects to the AT shifter that unlocks the shifter when the key is in the ignition and the brake is pressed.

Either that electrical box isn't unlocking or the linkage between that box and the shifter isn't connected correctly.

The shift lock solenoid restricts shifter movement when in certain gears with the brakes not pressed.

the lock-up (torque converter) solenoid locks the torque converter while at cruising speed (on the interstate for instance) to drive the gears directly like a manual trans. this reduces drivetrain losses, improving mileage.
